Saharan Peripatetics #3 ... the big one

your posts are great ....keep walkin that desert :icon_thumright:

I immensely enjoyed viewing your finds from your adventure. I particularly liked that awl-shaped artiifact. It appeares to be finely flaked, just exquisitely made.

Man that sounds like fun. I have never done anything like that. Are there animals out there? I couldnt do anything like that here for fear of being attacked by some of the animals we have here that come out after dark. But that is truly a amazing adventure. Thanks for posting it.

What a great Vacation ! That scenery screamed old and the artifacts and fossils were first rate. I bet what you lost in water you gained in rocks. That would be a vacation worth repeating. Enjoy your trip and look forward to seeing what else you find.
Happy Holidays

Thank you friends, it was a great couple of days!

@Grim ... sorry, I hate to say there are no cleaned up pictures. I only have in situs. :-)

@digger ... if you like awls I'll photograph some next time I'm out there.

@rock ... there are no large animals out there. The biggest thing you might run across--if you're lucky--is a fennec (desert fox). There are kangaroo mice that will come and try to steal your food. There are lizards, of course, including some beautiful geckos. I've spoken with some people who think there may still be large cats in the Qattara Depression, but the whole area is still mined from WWI and WWII. And I suspect the antelope populations are too thin to support a big cat population.

@Tnmountains ... luckily it's cold out there, and I don't use much water. My ulta-light camping gear allows me to travel far and fast, including enough water for several days in the desert. When you're carrying nearly 4 liters of water for each camping day (summer) you simply can't go as far. I use about 1.5 liters/day in the winter. Of course, I always carry extra. :-)

Anyway, thanks again, everyone. And happy holidays!

Happy Holidays to you! When they worked that awl, it appears that they did some meticulous flaking on it. Did you retrieve those artifacts, or did you leave them be?

cool pic by the way

So do you ever keep them or do you just admire them and leave them where they are?

@ rock and digger ... When I've come across significant neolithic hot spots in the past I've emailed researchers to provide photos and GPS coordinates. Not sure if that does any good, but I'm still hopeful.

@ sohio ... the camel was in the shop for repairs! Seriously, though, those are some nasty, stinky, and incredibly tough creatures!
