Sacagawea Dollars "D" Mint Marks?

Hello all,,,
I have a friend who has a brand new roll of Sacagawea Dollars with a "D" mint mark...
I was looking on PCGS's website and they show a value $5 for a grade of MS62 and a a value of $6500 for a grade of MS69... What do you all think the chances are of any of them grading that high... Did he make a good choice when purchasing these, or what?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....
Thanks, Leon...

Re: Sacagawea Dollars "D" Mint Marks?

MS69 is the hardest grade to get, and nearly impossible.
If the roll came straight from the mint, he has a chance. Either way, it's worth it to send all the coins in for grading, if he can afford it. Even if some grade a MS67 he'll be ok. Even that grade is really hard to get. Just keep your fingers crossed. It's kinda like playing the lottery...

Thank you very much djui5...
I'm not sure if the coins are in a roll from the mint, or not. I do know he said he purchaced them from a bank back in 2000...

Would you happen to know what the cost of having coins graded would be? I don't know anything about this process.

Again, thanks for your help.
Have a great day, Leon...

Re: Sacagawea Dollars "D" Mint Marks?

The cost of grading varies but it would be very costly to have a whole roll graded. If he got them from a bank the coins have probably been banged around and mechanically rolled, very slim chance of anything good. The coins are not rolled at the mint so they are bagged, shipped , dumped rolled etc. The best bet is to look through carefully and look for especially nice ones. If odds of finding them were good, they would not be worth so much.

I agree with l.cutter. Go through them, WITH WHITE GLOVES ON, and if you see any that look perfectly flawless, having no tiny scratches or marks, then have it graded. If there appears to be any kind of scratch, flaw, or wear, don't bother. Whatever you do, DO NOT TOUCH THEM WITH YOUR BARE HANDS. If he has handled the coins already, chances are you won't get a MS69 grade, but maybe something lower. Also, when you find a coin that looks perfect, put it in something protective. You can buy little cases at the coin dealers in town, or put it in a ziplock bag, or something. Keep it away from the elements, and especially the oils of human contact.

Contact these people about grading, they're the best..
