I Started Carrying Mace/Pepper Spray With Me While Hunting

The only good thing that came from wild hogs, back when I was young I could go about anyplace in SWOK, no problem, and hunt arrowheads. As the years went by, more places became off limits and farmers didn't really want anybody on the property. The hog problem became worse when my son came along and found if you asked to go in and hunt arrowheads, it might be no, but if you asked to come in and hunt wild hogs, well sure boys! Him and his buddies would load up their AK's, shoot hogs, and in the meantime look for arrowheads.

While this won't work on the animals, this will on the 2 legged ones.

Boy be careful not to flash that peppergun near a cop, you'll most likely be dead quick!!

Leg hold traps need to be banned forever. They cripple anything that steps into them. Cats, dogs, a fawn and so on. If I ever found my cat or dog in a leg hold trap, that trapper would never set a trap in my area again...

Tim, a deer will pull it's foot right out of a "foot hold" trap. They're designed that way.

The only way your dog or cat could be caught in a foot hold trap is if it was out wandering where it had no business being in the first place. Only an idiot would set one where a pet could access it.

Have you ever read the trapping reg's for your state?

Leg hold or Foot hold traps are not legal for use in Rhode Island.

I wrote a post (above) that is the true facts. I don't trap any more so I'm not waving some banner about them, and whether you believe it or not at least someone told you the truth and not a bunch of propaganda.

FWIW, your ancestors, my ancestors and everybody's ancestors used traps of various types in order to gather food. If they hadn't, none of us would be here today.

I do understand your feelings about it all, however. I quit trapping 30 years back,
and now I just make friends with critters. 8-)

Well if you pull any firearm/weapon on an officer it's your fault whatever happens next.
I didn't say "pull it on an officer" I said not to flash it near a cop.
Many places where open carry is not legal if a cop see a gun you get their attention real quick and they will pull theirs on you and any wrong or quick move on your part will get you shot.

Just because it's prohibited doesn't mean someone isn't doing it. I've run into many spots in the woods where someone was obviously baiting deer with huge piles of apples, even though baiting deer is illegal in RI. Reporting them is pointless because the DEM is in bed with the hunters. Can't lose all those hunting license fees, you know...

Watching that video, looked like a planned ambush. Scary. I've carried a revolver, but where YOU were? perhaps an AR-15 with a LARGE capacity magazine would be good. If detecting there? I think maybe a fella along with you as a gun barrier?

Well, if you see one set, then you can remove it, or better yet, call the game dept. and let them catch the person.

Don't know who the Dem is, but if you believe someone is baiting deer then don't hesitate to call the game dept. Presuming they are in bed with the hunters denies an honest game warden the chance to do their job. :icon_thumright:

Sorry, DEM is Department of Environmental Management. I've only contacted them once and they gave me the runaround. When I was metal detecting a couple of years ago, I found two dead deer about 25 feet from a walking trial next to a baseball field. This trail is heavily used by kids and senior citizens (for exercise). The deer had been gutted with the entrails left next to their bodies. Some meat was removed, but not much. Total waste of two very large deer. There was a pile of apples nearby, so I'm assuming they were shot illegally with baiting.

I called the DEM and they came up with every excuse not to check it out. "How do you know they were harvested illegally?" "Seeing a few apples nearby doesn't mean they were baiting the deer." "Do you know who shot them?" "Nothing wrong with hunters "harvesting" deer and so on." They never bothered to check it out, since the deer were stlil in the exact same spot a couple of weeks later when I went detecting back in that area.

DEM knows who butters their bread. It's the hunters who pay their salaries, not the private citizens who don't hunt. The whole deal left a bitter taste in my mouth...

How about some fawn in trap pics you took ?

Huge piles! And you don't report them because....No one who doesn't know you took pictures of them will do anything about it...

Got pictures of the huge piles?
Why wouldn't a huge pile of apples at home have more value than no deer in the woods from huge pile of apples they wait until dark to eat because they don't have to compete for the huge piles?
Did you take pictures of the traps guarding the huge piles?
Road hit deer are free. Apples get pricy. Well maybe not where you are if illegal huge piles are all over in between the trapped fawns.

Hi. Im interested in this.
I and my father used to trap rabbits here when there was a bounty. Not anything great but pocket money for me.
In his younger days was survival food as a kid in the depression days.
He taught me to set snares with weights and kinda hangman nooses in tree limbs. I did catch them that way.
But, here the old Aussie rabbit traps became illegal from catching native animals. But we can use rubber leg catch traps still.
Interesting subject 👍

From what you describe, they sound like poached deer to me considering the limited butcher job. Is this trail where somebody could hear the gunshots?

Suggestion: If you ever see someone with a rifle around that area, and that you believe is poaching, I'd just call 911 and tell them the truth, that being there is someone walking around with a firearm on a trail frequently used by kids. Don't even mess with the DEM. Believe me, you'll have law enforcement there in a big hurry, and if they're up to no good the cops will find out.

Got no problem with legal hunters, but poachers..that's different.

Leg hold traps do not cripple anything that steps in them. Years ago I was having trouble with raccoon killing my chickens. I set traps to permanently get rid of them. So I caught my neighbors cat and I released it. The stupid cat didn't learn it's lesson the first time and I caught it again, so I released it the 2nd time. What does the cat do? I catch it again. After the 3rd time it never got caught again. That cat lived for years after and was never injured the 3 times I caught it.

No houses really close to the spot, so they could get away with it without anyone hearing the shots. I'm thinking they were hunting at night, since there's a lot of people around the ballfield in the daytime.

No leg hold traps near the apples. I was referring to someone poaching deer, not trapping them. Apples are dirt cheap around here. Apples that fall from the trees are not sold to the public unless they're for livestock. We have quite a few apple orchards around here, so not much demand for them. Deer meat would be worth a lot more than a rotting pile of apples...

That's your story.

Do a Google image search for animals caught in leg hold traps. You'll find plenty of pics of cats, dogs and probably fawns. They need to be banned, period.
