Re: sabor found

It's a WW2 Japanese Dress Saber. I have one JUST like it that my Grandfather brought back from Japan where he did Occupation Duty just after the War ended. He also brought back an Arisaka Rifle and SOMEHOW escaped the Army with his M-1 Carbine and I have those too. My hilt is IDENTICAL to yours. On the top of the hilt mine has a little silver emblem soldered to it that I don't know the significance of. The flower on the side is a cherry blossom, a traditional Japanese symbol. If I wasn't in Iraq right now I'd post a pic to show you. Incidentally, I also have a Marine NCO Sword on my wall. I was in the Corps from 1983 to 1996 before joining the National Guard.

Anyway it is DEFINITELY a WW2 Japanese Dress Saber.

Re: sabor found

Looks similar to a WWII era Japanese sword a neighbor gave me when I was a kid. . . the blade on mine is about 29" long.
I seem to recall someone in a previous post found one like this in a stream ???

Take care,

That Silver emblem is just like the one on mine (see my post). Yours looks about in the same shape as mine with most of the gilding gone from it. I wonder if there's anyone whop restores them?

Re: sabor found

nice find a WW 2 era japanese dress saber ( sword) --- very nice find indeed -- I would be leery of non expert "repairs" --as you might mess up its collectors value.

Re: sabor found

Definitely DON'T have anyone mess with it, you'd cut any value by at least half! I found this at this site: http://www.thelanesarmoury.co.uk/shop/shop.php

A Japanese Russo-Japanese War Officer's Kyu-Gunto Sabre. Traditional pierced gilt hilt nickle plated steel scabbard. Wire bound polished horn hilt. Small denting to scabbard. One of the most influencial and interesting wars in Japanese modern history, however, the outcome was catatrophic for both participants, as although the Japanese Navy defeated the Mighty Russian Fleet, it's incredible cost bankrupted both economies.

Code: 11816Price: £295.00 ($575.00 US)

A beautiful find, congratulations! I've always wanted to find a sword, and always had that vision of one behind the wall or in the rafters when I was remodeling houses for a living in Georgia.

Wow, so the one I have is older than I thought (unless they kept producing them after the Russo-Japanese War. Mine has a very bad dent and rust spotting on the scabbard and the handle is loose.

Thanks for the info!

Re: sabor found

that type of japanese sword pattern was made from the early 1890's till the end of WW2 -- when swords were outlawed in japan -- there are many fine "details" that need to be closely looked at to aid in tracking down exactly when it was made time frame wize . -- they are highly collectible items.
