ruined my day of detecting

I got up early this morning to go detecting and decided i wanted to hit the quarter corner because it is close to where i live.
I got there around 7 a.m. and i started getting decent signals and was digging the ordinary clad we all find .
At around 8:15 it was getting hot and i was thirsty and started heading towards the car to get some cold water i had in my cooler when i hear a whump, whump, whump, whump sound and here comes a large black helicopted over the tree tops and began landing about 25 feet from my car.
I was like what the heck is going on/
When the helicopter is on the ground out steps three kentucky state police troopers who started heading my way and with serious looks on their faces.
I was like hows it going today, whats going on?
They told me they had a complaint of someone possibly planting marijauna plants and asked me for an identification and wanted me to come to the helicopter for questioning.
I told them i was only metal detecting and i have permission to do so. They ran a check on my license, car registration and serached my car ( with my permission ). After finding nothing they took off without saying anything and was gone.
After that i was like real ready to go home and get a shower.

Dang, I'm sorry your detectin day got ruined that would suck for sure. I can feel everyone about the money for the helicopters used by the police as it does cost a pretty penny to fly those jokers around however, there is a reason that they were using a helicopter rather than a patrol car and that is because it is much easier to look down from the sky and find growing marijuana than it is from a car, which you virtually have no view into thick woods and overgrown fields from. The drug task forces find the majority of illegal growing weed from the air as that is the only practicable way to get to many of the isolated areas that the growers plant the marijuana.

Well, anyway, I am sure you will find something cool tomorrow. Keep the passion high bud!

cool story! i would love to see that bird coming in. it reminds me of my brother's story. he is a truck driver. he was off the job and driving his pick up. any how, he went thru a small town and a trooper pulled in behind him. he was legal. a short while later he came behind another trooper going slow. about a half mile later, red lights and guns. another trooper pulled up. after a bunch of crap they said a conv. store had got robbed and he fit the perfect description. rolling road block. fun. another story of mine. bank robbery. road block. just got off work. a lot of guns and cops in my face. just being safe.

Since others are putting in their little stories about similar circumstances, without the metal detecting connection, here's mine.

In 1966 in Miami. My friend and I had just left our neighborhood on our way to Miami Beach when just before the Causeway we were signaled by a police car behind us to pull over with them behind us. We were in an Austin Healey sportscar so it was difficult to see behind us through the plastic window. We hesitated and they again, over the loudspeaker, ordered us to gently step out of the car with our hands in the air. We did, looked behind us and there was the police car with 2 officers, one on each door, with their guns aimed at us. They carefully approached us and after they were assured that we were unarmed and harmless, and while one kept his eyes on us and the other looked my friend's car over, told us that we had just come from an area where shots had been fired. That was true as I remembered hearing shots as we got on the main road leading to the Causeway but we didn't think anything of it.

I'm usually easy going & Laugh off Official stupidity.
If it were a Car i'd laugh.

but considering what they did.
i'm sure they saw from the air you had a detector.
If not they would have had Ground support.

And even if they didn't see from the air,
When they did from the ground they should have apologized & Left,
end of subject.

But having to come to the helicopter for questioning ?
Outrageous !

I can laugh about what happened now, but even though I know I wasnt doing anything wrong or had anything to hide , I admit I was scared.
Someone said they was probably in the area doing air searches for pot and this school ( quarter corner ) is in an out of the way area of town with lots of trees around it, so that is a possibility.
It was getting hot and i still had to work later in the afternoon, so I just went ahead and called it a day.
But now every time we see a helicopter my kids says, daddy they are looking for you again...

I got told by a kid once that I shouldn't be detecting at his school, he went on and on about it so I decided to do the right thing and leave, but to have the cops turn up in a helicopter, well I don't feel so bad now!

I was metal detecting today at a school when I heard helicopter... I looked up, it was way in the distance, but heading in my direction, kind of........ As soon as I saw it I was thinking of your post and your story, and hoping it wouldn't get any closer to me..... My hopes were soon dashed, The chopper must have seen me!! He took a sharp left turn as if to get a closer look at me....It circled over me!! At this point I could see it was a police helicopter..

The chopper then circled back over top me once more. I really thought they were going to land just like the one that spoiled your day.... They must of been toying with me because they flew off in the distance, only to fly back towards me again !! Then they finally flew away.... I did the same thing........... I was out of there......

Dude that is wrong, they have to have a search warrant to search your personal belongings or else its illegal. You should have wrote down their badge numbers or something, or complain to the chief of police about their actions.
It really is worth it to report, some people abuse their powers.
