OK, my final guess is a drapery rod holder that mounted to decorative trim around a window.

That was my guess too. Something to do with a window treatment.

hi everyone,
i'm new to this, indulge me...
my first impression was that it is a "quick release" latch for a roll-up window shade.

Do you mean a sprung roller type shade/blind of the 1950's and 60's ?
The connection rings a bell with me.

and Welcome to TNet too

yes, triki, exactly. the kind that a small manipulation would send them spinning and flipping like in the cartoons. i think when i was a kid i had to "fix" one.

Thanks allsmith.
I dug this piece up in the side yard of a 1779 plantation house I hunt. Even as of today the house is still occupied, so I have no clue what era this would have been from? If I had to guess, I'd say early 1900's, but who knows?
Thanks,
MM

I think its a storm window casement or screen casement lock....mounted on outside of house ...put storm window in and little pointed thing fits into a groove to lock window in place /or screen

I think it is a device to hold a line taut and then lift the lever to release it, Specially if the inside is in the form of a cam( rotates off center). Could be used on an awning, fishing line holder or anything else that needed to be caught and held tight. But what do I know? I have mane and used such cam lock devices for years and in various sizes. Bob ::)

This piece is an attachment for the old wind-up style music box or other novelty piece. The handle looks to be a bent from its original upright position. I am certain that this is the hand crank for a wind-up device. - relix

That was my thoughts but I dont think it has a cam and cannot hold a line tight.
Can it tighten up on a line, ModernMiner?

A pic would be nice.
How would you crank it? Like a ratchet? It doesnt go all the way around. Could you explain.
