the piece of rock was rounded as usual.. the original strata have discontinuities ... may be the thermal stress crack the rock along those planes...
I remember my paleontology professor used to leave fossil bearing rocks hiddend in the field but esposed to sun, than after months he came back and rocks have brake perfectly revealing the fossil (if there was any) because the fossil itself represent a plane of discontinuity.
