Here is a "front view"
Well, lets see,.960 O.D. .750 I.D. Abit large for a ring I think,a very BIG thimble too.The I.D. does give the appearance of being cut though. As far as a compression washer, don't believe so,Never see one made from brass that size, copper yes.The imprints have me baffled!

Ring size is a 6, that I checked pretty early..but when I was gonna post it the discussion had headed in the "not a ring" direction and I didn't know if ring size would be a good enough size indicator for the majority of people, so I just used a fabric measuring device my wife had close by.

The impressions are almost definitely cut marks, the picture makes it hard to see this with the grime still there in the grooves, but close up it is pretty clear.

I may stand corrected on a ring,I just measured mine,.780.It is possible!

After reading this post, I started wondering about my bone rings. On the page SS posted (great work SS), it stated these Dorset buttons were originally made from the horn of the Dorset Sheep. Now I'm thinking the bone rings I have were made for Dorset buttons. Whutcha think? If so, I can green check that post from January as well as all the other people who have found the metal ones.
I don't want to hijack this post, but I think it may help to tie all of this together. Here's the link to the TNet discussion:

Here's a site with some beautiful Dorset buttons:

And here's a site telling how to make modern ones:

:o

Could well be, I suppose it wouldn't have to be limited to Dorset Sheep Bone :P any bone would do, but I would like to know if they are any Dorset Sheep there, and when they were introduced, it would be nice to clear another one up...strange how things come around on T.Net :headbang:
