Round heavy iron.?

Found this diggin in American civil war area. What is it? And in picture what is the black rock its very lightweight and shiny. Found it while cleaning it up. Could it be civil war era how old?

Bart, I don't log on often because I am not allowed on at work. I often enjoy surfing this forum as I have for years and find it very relaxing. I use this on occasion when I exhaust all other methods I know of doing research on a "what is it ". We all start out curious and that is a GREAT thing! But could you please at the very least thank the people doing your research for you when they answer? I never post anything that I find unless it is a true curiosity. These folks here have vast knowledge but at some point you will tire them out and they will stop responding to you. Please at the very least post what State you are from so that we have some sort of idea of the history where you dig.
