cleaned the steins for like two hours each. so terrified of breaking them!!!!! :violent1:
both say Germany on bottom and are numbered
the leather and wood on the bellholder are petrified the bell is clay (ceramic)
the bell that is not in the wood is solid copper the hole and such have marks that make me think it was hand tooled?

whadda ya think. personally love the contents, incinerated whatever remained of the box  bugs and all!!:headbang: these were the larvae looking ones. UGHHHHHHHH
Any one know about steins?

Going to disinfect now.

Thanks,
Jay

Very interesting find and story.

Very cool....I once found two modern plastic mugs with some kind of gold writing on them....but for some reqason gave off a signal.
Very cool....will be following to see what you ended up with......

would love to see the box and before pics of everything - so cool

the bell set: if you see the leather its an old repair job for a crack
old timey nails and mount looks like iron?

Life is too short, why worry. Basically is what your stein says watered down. Kool find!

I read it as "so short is life of hours why waste them being sour!"?

Its just a quick translation I did in between calls. When you worry you are sour, It is just how I took it. Germans have a strange way of saying things. Just like if I say, I am upset. I could be mad, or I could be worried, or sad. Both ways basically can mean the same. Awesome translation on your part too :)

the mugs are pre WWII, after the war it became known as west germany

Great find! Awesome craftsmanship ! Mystery is, why was it buried?

maybe thick gold plating on the mugs?? idk

thanks for that!! know somewhere I can get value and more info?

anyone know about the bell?

Great finds - After a thorough cleaning , I'd be quaffing beer out of those steins - they are beautiful ! I know a lot of people use those
steins as dust catchers on a shelf or in a cabinet - I'd be using them for sure !

… Mystery is, why was it buried?

My thoughts, exactly.

Hey bigdisco,

Thanks for showing us. Were there German owner's of the house during the First War? Steins like that would have been most politically incorrect at the time.

Cold water to clean as hot dry glass breaks!
A German friend when showing mugs would have me hold the base toward a light while I viewed through stein from top with lid open.
Worth a try with yours to see if there is a silhouette/scene! not visible without light backing.
At least one in pics seems to have something there.

What I find to be most interesting about your find is that with the wood being completely rotted and bug eaten that the wraps could be identified as old newspapers. That is strange!

Nice finds!
