After 2 days of feasting and loafing we grabbed our kit and headed out into the fog! Today we decided to finally dig the Roman Road that runs thru our permission, to see if we could find a surface. I say we, but as you might of guessed himself was in charge of the digging… I went off and detected some treasure…. ! Unfortunately he didn’t find a stone surface, but he had a nice time! 😆 xx

There is a ditch either side of the road..

Looking into the hole he went down till he hit the blue clay layer…

That's so cool. Did Roman roads have hard surfaces (other than packed dirt)? Would you know it if you hit it, or just dig right on through?

Yes Some of them had a stone surface, which is what we were hoping to find… he said there was no obvious difference as he dug… but we will send pics to the FLO so she can have a look with here expert eye! xx

While stationed in Germany, I always found it fascinating that there was a Roman road running through our small training area (hunting trenches from the 16th and 17th century, and ancient Celtic mounds in one obscure corner, too.) The road ran from Rotweil to the downtown center of Stuttgart, where there are the ruins of a Roman bath and an ancient church from centuries later. So many layers of history in Europe!

Wow that’s amazing, this road is the old Salt Road. It runs thru about 5 of our fields. it is used as a modern road either end of our section. According to archaeological info there is lots of Roman archaeological sites in our area so we are very lucky! 😁

Americans be like: "Wow! an Indian Head Penny from 1894! It's so old!" LOL😂🤣🥹😭

That's really cool diggings.
Tell Himself that me picture dousing said the stones are 22"(55.88CM)below that blue clay.
That should keep him busy.🤣

(Blossom you can thank me later for another trouble free day of detecting)

No, TBH you folks across the pond have some amazing opportunities and find some really amazing things. That coin find almost leaves me breathless - to buy one in a shop is one thing, but to dig one yourself, I think I'd have a heart attack thinking I'm probably the first person to hold it since it was lost.

I've come to respect Mackaydon's insight and comments on things like this, and realize he knows his shite! I guess I can see the profile - if I hold a leaded mirror over my right shoulder on a night with a waxing moon and squint really hard. But what an amazing find! Yes, we find 1890s or some of the early coins from our east coast - they are great in their own right, finding relics like these are in a whole other class!

Great work - now schedule an appointment with your cardiologist for a check up!

Congrats.

First couple pics are fantastic.

Good try on the road locating.
Himself might still be chasing me if I had happened by to announce he wasn't going to find many worms by digging in such a fashion.

Nice recovery on the Roman coin!
