Hello friends !
I'm pretty sure we have identified an ancient roman metallurgical workshop in an area where a few years ago I was surprised by the multitude of mineralized rocks. This area is a bit far from where I've found traces of roman habitation near a military roman tower. The first signs were a quadrilateral area of 25-30 sqm located near an old road.So I found there few nails of roman military sandals(caligae) announcing the roman presence. In a thorough examination of this place, I've found many metallurgical fragments of iron ore, widespread in the quadrilateral area and around it.At the same depth, I was pleasantly surprised to identify two spearheads, iron key, iron brooch , ballista arrowheads , iron tubes (probably some accessories from metalworking), an fragmentary iron axe, pottery fragments (at surface) and a multifunctional iron axe rarely kept in excellent condition, dolabra. It's about a versatile axe used by the people in Italy since ancient times. This was similar to a modern pickaxe .It had a broad axe head on one side of the handle and a pick on the other. The dolabra could serve as a pickaxe used by miners and excavators, a priest's implement for ritual religious slaughtering of animals and as an entrenching tool (mattock) used in roman infantry tactics (see the cast of Trajan's Column). However, it was useful as an improvised weapon if the user was attacked and could not reach his usual weapons. The weight of the weapon combined with the force of a swing concentrated on the sharp pick could inflict serious, often fatal injuries.
