rod/reel holder?

, tried to brush it but it is turning white.any ideas on the year maybe?

Part of an early 60's fishing rod. I think mine used to have a cork handle .Hand brushing lightly might clean it but a wire wheel in a drill or any high speed buffer will discolor it, and actually melt the metal. Turning white cause it's made of "pot" metal.

If the metal isn't corroded to the point where it's brittle, you could probably fit a new rod in it and use it. Does the reel clamp still move?
