hello! just realized this "what is it?" subforum existed so im posting this here in hope of some ideas. found this at the bottom of an eroding embankment near the niagara river (wetern new york) and ive tried to determine what it is via the internets with all sorts of descriptive and creative search phrases and, failing in that, resorted to the google lens app backup. depending on the angle google is telling me this is either a: meteorite fragment, a skull fragment, a clam, or a piece of grit tempered pottery. i doubt its the first two and im pretty sure it isnt a clam, so the last option seemed most reasonable to me, though it may actually be none of those things at all. still, id be interested to know what it actually is so i can stop thinking about it. its about 2" in diameter at its widest point, slightly curved-more than i would expect to find in an unintentional rock, and seems just a bit lighter than what i would expect it to be. any help is very much appreciated as always. cheers!

Looks like a piece of bone to me.

thanks! bone is starting to make more sense the more i look into it. maybe a kneecap or something like that? adding a few more photos but im not sure if they will show anything new- this is about as close a photo as i can take without it blurring out. also i was off in my size estimate. widest spots are about 2 inches across and the thickest part is about 1 cm, the thinnest part about 1 mm. 01.jpg

Crendel, I'm no anthropologist, but after seeing the additional pics
I'm pretty damn sure you've got a piece of bone.

Now it's figuring out what (or who) the bone came from. :occasion14:

ha! no doubt. at least i have something to do now for the next couple of decades. it makes sense but its still kind of hard for me to see it, probably because i was thinking pottery if anything. then again i have put in a grand total of zero hours of anthropology study up until now so i will always defer to a more experienced opinion. thanks for your take! its much appreciated. cheers!

These look like sections of crinoid columnals that fell out, looks like bone but there’s just something not right for bone. I would think one side would have cortical bone or the entire thing would be more spongey.

I totally see that. i wasnt going to do the old lick-it test but i did wet my finger and it does have a bit of stickiness to it, for whatever its worth. its just odd to me because ive been checking out rocks around here since i was a wee lad and ive never come across anything like it. and the fairly smooth, albeit porous, curved bottom has me perplexed. it seems like it could be a handful of things but doesnt really totally fit the bill for me as any one thing.
