I am no expert but I would say those are just rocks, that have taken on a neat shape do to mother nature. When you start finding what your looking for there will be no doubt in your mind they show human alteration. When I hunt creeks I find more in the water but I think its just because they are easier to see there. always walk upstream when looking in the water, and then take your time on the sand bars.

On rivers concentrate on the banks and shoreline. Look where other rocks are being held on the bank. A downed tree will hold points as will roots and larger rocks. Look in the water and go slow. I like to kinda grid out the bank and will make marks in the sand as I hunt. Creeks its mostly in the water and on the gravel bars.
Good luck!
