RING #4 THIS YEAR IS IT GOLD?

Sure, seen many that are marked and are not, look for an EP (electroplate)after the K mark or before the 14 or GF(gold filled) or PL(plated)

Congrats on the ring, can't wait to see a pic!

Yes as everyone said, there have been many scam artists throughout the ages. Hope it is gold.

found about six inches down in a park

false alarm! it does have a GF
how does that differ from plated?

GF, RG, RGE, and GP are all about the same. Not much difference. Gold Filled, Rolled Gold, Rolled Gold Electroplate, and Gold Plate

It has to do with how the gold is bonded to the base metal. BTW, some of base metals are silver and you won't know it.

Junk or not, you have posted more finds this year than all previous years combined Jeff:tongue3: Congrats on all your finds. Better late than never, right?

Gold-filled jewelry is composed of a solid layer of gold, which must constitute at least 5% of the item's total weight, mechanically bonded to sterling silver or a base metal. The related terms "rolled gold plate" and "gold overlay" may be used if the layer of gold constitutes less than 5% of the item's weight.

In other words... Gold filled is MUCH better than gold plate or electroplate.

And is scrapable at most refiners.

Rolled Gold Plate or RGP items have a surface layer of solid gold that is regulated by the government to contain a required minimum of gold. The content of gold is generally lower than gold-filled

ok then, when I find one marked 14k without additional markings it can be assumed it is solid? Or not?

Thanks for the continuing education guys!! ( one would have thought that by now I would know everything)

The answer to that is a most definite maybe. There are bogus marked jewelry out there. I have seen a lot. NEVER trust a mark now days.

Another one is 14KP. That means 14K PLUMB or EXACTLY 14K. Some 14K was 13. something or even 15.something but plump means EXACT.

I can see that on a beach, but up here I can tell if they have been down for awhile
