Dug a Revolutionary War button in fantastic condition, and it's an early one as well. A 16th Regiment button of the Massachusetts Grand Army of 1775. According to georgewashingtoninauguralbuttons.com, these numbered Massachusetts Grand Army Buttons are listed as having an R-5 rarity (6-10 known to exist). I don't know whether that's accurate or not, but they do appear to be very scarce. :happy3:

Before April 1775, the 16th Regiment was previously known as Colonel Nixon's Minutemen, and later assimilated into the Continental Army as the 4th Continental Regiment. However, it's unknown if the soldier wearing this was in a different regiment or actually in the 16th regiment, because in 1775 the button suppliers couldn't keep up with the coats given to the troops, and in the end decided to give out any number to any regiment. With that being said, the 16th Regiment would fight at the Battle of Bunker Hill, New York Campaign, Battle of Trenton, Battle of Princeton and the Battle of Saratoga. Regardless of what patriot wore it, I'm very proud to have saved this one.

More info on the 16th here: https://books.google.com/books?id=M...=onepage&q=Nixon's 16th Regiment 1775&f=false

That is amazing! I am sure we will see this up top soon!

You can't ask for anything more in an excavated Rev War button - except maybe who wore it. My banner vote has been submitted :icon_thumleft:

Great find if you don’t get recognition for that one you never will.

Just incredible man. You’ve found two of the nicest finds I’ve seen on here this year. Keep up the good work

I sure hope this one will get the well deserved banner.

Amazing find. A complete and very detailed button. Congratulations.

SWEEEEET...Can't get much better than that! Shank intact also, icing on the cake. Like you said, that thing is in wonderful shape. Congrats to you Mister.

I didn’t even vote because de it seemed so obvious. But I will now

WOW! This is a banner find!!! Congrats.

It's most appropriate that I offer my congratulations on this particular find on the 4th of July. This find has it all - rarity, history, and a amazing degree of preservation. Your narrative, inspiring photos, and detailed research cover all the bases. It's all very impressive. I know that others have voted banner, but I believe no member can have two banners at the same time - forum rules, but who cares? You're having an awesome year. Your shoe buckle from May and now this???!!! :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy: If I was to find just one of these and went the rest of the year digging nothing but shotgun shells, that would be fine with me.

Thanks, the good sites are getting harder to find, so I might be digging mostly shotgun shells in the near future haha.
Yeah I think you're right on the 2 banner rule. Kinda silly, but whatever.

BANNER finds are BANNER finds! Even more impressive if you got them in quick enough succession that one is already up there. They’ve made exceptions to this rule before. This find is far too special to not be up top.

Agreed - especially if exceptions have been made in the past.

My banner vote went in before this post - CONGRATS.

I would think seriously about protecting this one, although it looks pretty stable, I can see areas that concern me.

Are there more professional options rather than the old 50/50 Elmer's glue & water mixture?
