The Siege of Pensacola in 1781 was pretty interesting for about 4 weeks. Even though Spain was not allied with the U.S., Bernardo de Galvez corresponded quite frequently with George Washington trading information on troops movements and planned operations.

The British and Spanish commanders (General John Campbell (British), and Bernardo de Galvez (Spanish) ) agreed ahead of time that the determination of the battle in Pensacola would only take place at Fort George. In other words, they agreed that the British would only defend that location if the Spanish agreed to only attack that location and spare the town. The British garrison consisted of approximately 1200 regular infantry and was later bolstered by Royal Navy seamen from the HMS Port Royal and HMS Mentor (the later was burned to prevent capture).

My detecting partners and I have made some pretty interesting finds with regard to this period but most are from camp sites and not from the actual fort area itself since it is protected by law.

Cannon balls, musket balls, buttons, etc. are frequently found in the neighborhood surrounding the fort and its redoubts.

I also recommend finding a used copy of "Log of the HMS Mentor" which was written by Capt. Robert Deans. Much of the log was written in the months and years prior to the Siege of Pensacola, but the last 8 weeks of the log is the only known detailed account of the siege from the British perspective. Capt. Deans, a vast majority of his crew, and most of his cannons were taken off his ship to assist in the defense of Fort George and it's redoubts. As the Spanish fleet cleared the bar into Pensacola Bay, Capt. Deans ordered a skeleton crew to sail his ship up Blackwater River to prevent capture. However, his ship foundered in a storm and was later burned by the crew.
