Hey guys,

With the weather finally warming back up I hit a few Revolutionary War hot spots that have produced some incredible pewter buttons in the past. The first find was a oval cuff with a subdued 19 still visible inside a small diamond. This cuff was found next to a 19th Regiment of Foot button dug earlier this year. The prize of the day though had to be an even rarer, scissor cast pewter P N button. These buttons are attributed with the southern campaign are still a bit of a mystery. Some have speculated that the P N cast on the back of these buttons stood for Patria Novia or "New Homeland", serving as a covert means of identifying the wearer as patriot.

After switching sites, I linked up with Gheenoe78 try our hand at a War of 1812/ Civil War battery location. The top finds were a Revolutionary War period, decorative pewter shoe buckle and a stunning pewter 1812 I button. A nearby homestead site also produced a pocket watch, thimble, door lock and knob, as well as a lock and chain...fresh out of electrolysis and a hot wax treatment. Also managed to spot a 18th century stub clay pipe! Quite a week- thanks for looking!

Hey Ahab, this pewter buckle is the first intact one I've ever found. Any ideas if these floreal design buckles were used by the military as well as civilians? I do know that these large rectangular and highly curved Artois buckles date from the 1770′s – 1790′s. They are named after the Comte d’Artois who as French Ambassador to England introduced them into this country.

I'm not knowledgeable enough with these to say definitively. But the time frame certainly fits and all of the evidence from that site certainly makes for a very strong case. I think a lot of people make assumptions about certain items that I'm not comfortable making just because it's very hard to ever know for sure with certain items. I appreciate the fact that you didn't automatically associate it as being a military piece....but I would say with so much evidence surrounding this piece tgere a much better case for it than some items that get tagged as military. Regardless it is an incredible find. I'm pretty stunned at the condition of that pewter. We rarely see pewter shoe buckles(I have found one partial out of a number of shoe buckles that I've found.) that is one very special site you're on my friend. I'm excited to see what else might come out of that dirt. I've found zero Rev War items. High on my list. Keep that stuff coming
