Returned to a large ploughed field which I now know had Linseed drilled into it in March & due to no rain it all failed. We did 5 hours today but the conditions (dried clay) make it dangerous extracting finds & difficult, added to this it's not a very productive field :P Still I had a good result with the now delivered 11" coil getting a hammered quarter on its maiden outing :laughing7: My old 11" found me far more cut qrters & farthings than my 9" stock coil. (that funny enough found me the sixpence yesterday) 8)
So we had 1 hammered shortcross & a scrappy roman on both visits to this tough field. :icon_thumright:

I found a most interesting item, not because I haven't got a few but because of whats happened to it. Its a 13-14th C Lead Seal Matrix which I believe to have been deliberately folded in half. This reminds me of the coin folding custom of the similar period. Is there any correlation between the two :dontknow: Not sure as I've forgotten the reason they did it, to bring good luck or cast a curse :icon_scratch: All I know is that a plough never did it  There maybe a number of other reasons unknown to me, any thoughts?
When its not folded it would have looked like:

Your "not very productive fields" seem to have some decent finds. Always amazed at the number of buttons you find. For us it's poptops. At least yours are old! The quarter is quite pretty.

That would be a really awesome day for me. I'm too easy to please I guess. Nice finds.

Crusader it just strikes me odd that you would use a US penney to show a quarter cut. :) I am so impressed with your neat finds. Thank you for sharing them.

Why odd, I used your smallest change (that I have) to show its size :icon_scratch:

I just might learn something here. Is american coins common in England change or was this for the benifit of U. S. viewers to size? That is what struck me funny but I understand. I hope I didn't offend you.

I'm hard to offend :laughing9:
Sometimes you get them instead of a Penny, but this was left over from a friends holiday. I used it, because members from the US have asked what size my coins are. Generally the UK etc know the size, so yes its for your benefit.

I too have to think that you did "alright" for an unproductive field.

That quarter is a small bit of silver, less than a gram I expect, how deep would you have found that in the "dry" condition ? I did get a 5 cent silver (1.16 gram) at 8+ inches, but the soil was moist.

A cut coin is on my wish list.

I was pleased enough with the hammered & cut qrter but its a long journey to that field & the conditions meant we might break a valuable item. It could have been a lot worse.

0.34g at about 2-3inches, I've had them deeper on wet ground, but this was luckily shallow. :icon_thumright:
