Because of baseball, I've been detecting very little lately and finding even less. I took a day or two off to put in an appearance at our annual church camp, intending to do a little detecting as well. Four years ago, after I got my first detector, I took it to this camp to learn the machine and hopefully find some good stuff. The camp dates to 1894, and there had to be, once upon a time, a fortune in old coins lurking beneath its surface. As I sadly discovered, the camp has been searched; to find anything, I've had to move into more obscure areas of the camp. Last night I thought to myself, "I'm going to check the rocks and banks by the old swimming hole." The camp is just across the road from the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, and I was swimming in it myself 25 years ago. I knew that such a spot had to be used long before me, so it was worth checking out. One of our readers, but not a member, will be able to identify the spot as soon as I describe it. The area has huge boulders right at the river's edge, and when the water's high you can almost step right in from them. I started a search and quickly found a 29 wheat, confirming my suspicions about the place. I found some clad and was waving the detector over a small cleft between two rocks when I got a solid 90 on the XLT. That, more often than not, has meant silver half. Down maybe two inches, I popped out a dirty half dollar sized disk. With a river close by, I was able to wash it off and find that I was the lucky discoverer of a 35 Walker. I've found a couple from the teens, maybe a dozen from the '40's, but this was my first Walker from the 30's.
This area is also a teen hangout, where some of the campers gather to smoke the demon tobacco that's outlawed on the campgrounds. They were impressed by the find; most have probably never seen a silver half, let alone a Walker. But for some brush and poison ivy, I'd have done a more thorough search; as it was, night was falling and I had to pick up the kids from their children's meeting. The place would be a good one to revisit in December or January. No, I didn't nick it.
