IMHO - If you are responsible for mowing the yard, etc. - can't see why it would be a problem. But heck, the last person that took my advice is in Iraq!

I would have to say it may be ok. Im guessing you did pay a deposit when you moved in? the deposit covers any damage to the rental.Since it is a house, you are also renting the land it sits on, which also means your deposit covers damage to that too. I say go for it.

I live in South Carolina, and i am renting the house that i live in. Do i have to get permission to metal detect in the yard? I have seen a couple different answers at various places on the web, but nothing definitive, please help me out treasurenet.

Did you sign any sort of agreement when you moved in? You know, the usual boiler plate rental agreement that landlords have for tennants to sign. Read that. If it doesn't say "no metal detecting in the yard", then presto, there's your answer. Nothing prohibiting you from looking for the car key you "just lost" in the grass, right?

I've even gotten permission to hunt yards, where it was only the tennant giving me the "ok".

I would think it was ok as long as you don't bring the backhoe in and cut a hole in the drive then patch like some show on TV not saying any names LOL HH

I would not hesitate for a second to metal detect a house I am renting, I would be sure I did not dig large holes, but I dont dig large holes anywhere so that would be no problem...

I test mine in the back yard. Never even thought twice about it.

I did put down a deposit, pretty sure there is nothing in the lease about metal detecting but i will take a look just to be sure. I figured it was ok but like i said earlier, if you look else where on the web you will find people that say otherwise. Thanks for everyones input thus far!

I agree, i do my best to make it look like i was never digging in the yard. It was a little rough at first but i am getting better at pinpointing the target in the ground and cutting smaller plugs.

people are funny the best thing to do is go but keep quiet about it but if you do find a pot of gold the honorable thing to do is split 50/50 I know its tough to swallow but its better than being kicked out of your home

i do and my land lord says go for it and i didn't even ask him just gave the go ahead

You really got too be careful too be honest with you! Unless you and your landlord are on good terms you know drinking beers, having cookouts or is just a kewl person then yah I would say go for it! If they are not that type be very careful without permission mainly if you are hunting in the yard (not wooden areas or plowed field). If they really wanted too they could file civil charges against you in court for damaging their land (and I have seen this happen before) each hole you dig they can get you for damage if they wanted to be ass's about it. I.e. lets say you are hunting the yard and you hit some sort of wire/line or pipe and break it (which it does happen) they come out too look @ it and see all these holes that have been covered up and the yard looking alittle messy they could evict you for it then take you too civil court too collect damages on the yard. Will this happen? doubt it but people are very shady these days and you gotta be sure of things.

HutSiteDigger pretty much sums up what I was gonna say. Keep it low key and don't tear anything up and you'll probably be ok. Bring in GPR, a backhoe, maybe a workover drill rig, and metal detecting will probably be specifically prohibited in all leases in that part of the country.

Here's a thought, why not just ask your landlord?

Here's a thought, why not just ask your landlord?

Because that presumes the activity-in-question is something that "needs someone's permissions", to begin with. I mean, sure, if metal detecting inherently "needs people's permissions", then your premise is correct. But if one doesn't start out with that mindset, then no, it doesn't need "people's permission". If you start with the assumption that metal detecting is dangerous, damaging, etc.... then sure, you'd be correct. But if you start with the assumption that detecting is innocuous and harmless, then you'd come up different. For example: would you ask the landlord if you can do yoga in your living room? Or do crochette on your back porch. Probably not. Why? Because we all inherently recognize those things as harmless, innocuous, etc... Why then is detecting somehow considered evil, wrong, dangerous, hazardous, etc...?

I detected the apartment complex of the lawn where I lived once, and never thought twice about doing it (apartment's built in the late 1950s, so I found a few wheaties). The landlord lived across town, and only came by every week or so, to check on things. But quite honestly, even if he'd driven up right while I was in the front yard, I doubt he'd have cared less. But sure, use common sense: If your landlord is an eccentric or somehow odd or something, then sure, ...... a little common sense is in order. I think anyone who's lived some place more than a month or two, knows a general feel for the liberties at whatever-place-he-lives in, the personality of his neighbors, landlord, etc....

what
why'll looking for your keys with a beep and dig detector
you found 3 buffaloes, a shiny, walking liberty, a match box , one gold ring ,a copper thimble, and your keys...who would of guest all that and your keys..

you are renting the house and the land. Do you mow the grass and shovel the snow. Did you plant any flowers or plant a garden. I say go for it you paid rent just make sure you fill your holes and then water the grass to make sure it dosen't turn brown. Plus the water will help wash the loose dirt back down. Good luck and happy hunting...
