Some dark humor to enlighten the situation. My mom visited this place 12 years ago on motorcycle and her passanger filmed a Geigher counter. We had 12 years old radiation data and we wanted to see how radiation levels have chanced over the years. In this episode we were quite confident this area will not be re-populated because from reading maps we knew this area was poisoned with a wide range of nuclear isotopes including Plutonium 238+ Plutonium 239+ Plutonium 240. Plutonium was named after Pluto (God of the Dead). The name alone suggests that the chances for recovery of the area don't exist. There could be positive changes if, for instance the area was polluted only with cesium-137 which half life is 30 years whereas half-life of Plutonium-239 is over 24,000 years. Areas heavily polluted with Cesium on a long run will be better off than areas slightly poisoned by Plutonium like the one on this video. Usually if area got lethal doze of Plutonium it is written off, no one cares about additional amount of Cesium. Just like additional prison term won't make any difference for someone who is sentenced to life without parole.
