I picked this up at a sale yesterday, very old, unsigned, oil on board. No idea who painted it, or where. The only clue that I'm going by are the tassels on the hats. Does anyone have any idea where those hats are used? Thank you. I appreciate it.

Very interesting painting! :icon_thumleft:

I love this. Might be an amateur piece, but quality ‘outsider art’ in my book. I agree that it has age to it, though your guess as to exactly how old is as good as mine.

First thought that came to mind when seeing the soldiers is Napoleonic, maybe Austrian?

I believe this to be the 5 "Station of the Cross" were Simon of Cyrene is compelled to carry the cross. Therefore likely a singel piece out of a larger cycle.

For age and provenance, as already said your guess is as good as mine..... Here is my guess: It´s Catholic of course, protestants dont have the way of the cross. I see two fully blown Hussar Uniforms including stitching on the trousers. Therefore either earlier tahn turn of 20th century or Eastern European.

Also as said it is quality Amateur work. Though I personally reserve "Outsider Art" for the really weird stuff (paintings of mentally ill can be sometime baffling).
