My wife and I just returned from vacation in Northern Indiana. She wanted to go to Vegas to gamble, but I talked her into going to my home town and hit the casinos around there instead. Of course, me being able to detect up there had nothing to do with the decision. We had a great time fishing, hitting the county fair, demo derby, seeing friends and family, tipping a few margaritas, detecting (me), and gambling (both :icon_thumleft: ).
By the way, before you make me out to be a bad guy, my wife hit a $1300 royal flush playing video poker, and beat out three of us guys with the biggest fish earlier in the morning, so I don't feel too bad. ;D I told her I loved her MANY times after she hit that. :tongue3:
Now on to detecting.......... I had lined up a 1850's house in the country before we went back.
It was a beautiful old house and I almost felt guilty digging on their nice looking lawn. I was there for about three hours and the owner stayed by me and talked the whole time. :'( I was amazed to find can slaw, pop tops, and other crappe' in this yard. Somebody loved Pepsi products. ;D Unfortunately, I did not find one silver coin or even an IH! :-\ I was pretty upset with that, because I had high hopes on this place. Even the modern pennies were very deep in this soft black soil.
I was able to find a few keepers though to make it worth the trip. Being in the Indiana countryside on a 70 degree day at a beautiful place like this was a little piece of heaven for me. :angel7:
Posted are a recent & an old picture of the property.
My finds were:
*Small eagle cuff button (not pictured / kept by the owner)
*Cast metal bulldog with "Washington DC" on it (not pictured / kept by the owner)
*Flower button with "W.H. Jones Co. - Extra" back mark (circa 1830's)
*Leak clip or pin (1800's I'm thinking)
*Lantern piece - thumb wheel is dated April 30, 1883.
*Minnesota / South Dakota token
*Train button
*1917D wheat (strange metallic finish on the front)
*Skeleton key, kids ring, pottery shards, two small bottles.

Thanks for looking & have a great week,
MM

Looks like you had a great trip. Congrats to your wife on winning $1300. Maybe you should take her to Vegas.

Will they let me detect in the Vegas casinos? ??? :tongue3:

WOOHOO, welcome back, Dug!!!! :headbang:

I suggest that you buy your lovely wife another mighty Tesoro, because she would be a lethal babe with it. :notworthy: Heck, she could buy a $1300 one. :laughing9: I'm glad to see that you had a great time on your trip.

Too bad about the 1850 house. I bet someone cherry-picked it years ago. Oh well, you still were able to swing your machine and dig some nice relics!

Now, get back to your North Carolina sites and pull us out some more Confederate goodies! :notworthy:

Kyle

Interesting finds MM-My fav is the railroad buttton. Now that your wife hit it big, she can buy you that new tiller for the one acre garden-LOL!!! Did the relatives see your article in the August issue of Eastern & Western Treasures Magazine? HH.

Nice civilian button! I have two of those exact same design and backmark in my collection. I found one at an old homestead, then found the second one at an adjacent homestead the following hunt. When I looked at the old property deeds I found out that both houses were originally on one property before the Civil War. :)

Here's the same button on the salyers creek site:

It's always wonderful to hunt in a new place, my friend.

Thanks Big K! :icon_thumleft:
She is so darn lucky. Maybe I should take her to where I dug the NC buckle to see if she could find the other half? ??? :tongue3:
I spotted some more places while I was back there, so I'll line something up for next trip. ;D
Have a good one buddy,
Doug

Thanks Q,
I almost tossed that train button thinking it was just a rivet off some horse tack, then I saw a design on it. Into the pouch it went. ;D
That article came in handy back in Indiana too. I was able to show it to the property owner so they didn't think I was just some land pirate. :icon_thumleft:
Come on fall!!!

Thanks BB.
I think that was the first W.H. Jones button I've dug so far. I could tell by the weight of it that it would be a good one. :icon_thumleft:
There were two CW camps back there in my home town area. One has the power company built on it, and the other I haven't looked into yet. Maybe next trip back, I can find out where it was/is.
Have a great week,
Doug

;D Yeah, but unfortunately SHE wasn't looking for me to get a new detector. :tongue3: I wear the pants in the house, but they are HER pants. ;D

Maybe it's a button from an early 1900's TRAINing bra? :tongue3:
Thanks Bill.

Vacation again?? Didin't you just go to Minnesota or Wisconsin on a fishing trip ??? Maybe that 1300 bucks can buy you a new detector :laughing7: I bet the wife would like to hear that. Too bad you didn't make a lot of money detecting on your trip, but at least she did make up for it. Now you can go to Vegas.......the silver state :o Glad to hear you had a good time anyways. Now get back to work. :D

Dug,

Welcome back, my friend, to this metal detecting site! I am glad you enjoyed your trip with full passion.

Don't worry, bud, you are bound to find the CW loot soon. This fall is going to be killer for you in the way of Colonial and Civil War relics. :headbang: :notworthy: :hello2:

Keep the passion high!

LOL well, I wouldn't say they're worth that much--the site charges some awful high prices for civilian floral buttons... BUT, I do collect interesting civilian buttons (although I wouldn't pay 30 or 40 bucks for one  ).

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Sounds like you got your FIX in the Northern states, but
they didn't treat you as good as Carolina does!!!
Good hunt.

Ty,
You got that right. I'm baffled by the lack of coins at some of these places in Indiana. ??? I'm thinking they may be too deep?
I've hit numerous country houses with the soft black soil, and even the modern clad was about 6-8" in a lot of cases. I did have luck one time at a house in town though, and the soil harder there. I found old coins, tokens, buttons, etc. at that place.
Can't wait till fall, so I can take to the NC woods again. :icon_thumleft:

Yep, that's me. My son & I were just up in Wisconsin & Indiana the first week of June on a fishing trip. ;D :icon_thumleft:
O.K., back to work now.
Thanks Ron.

I wouldn't pay that much for one either. Not when we can find them ourselves. ;D
I really enjoy finding these old decorative buttons. It's been a while since I've found a nice one like this flower button.
