Hello everyone. Well I revisited a site where I have dug some really exceptional early 1800's Buttons. I brought along the Garrett ATPro to see what it would do on "Button Hill." The ground was real wet, because of the rain and sleet from last few days. Muddy in other words..First good hit was a convex button. I thought hey this is cool..Little did I know it was really cool. Well Flat buttons were flying and so was the mud. I stayed as long as I could on Button Hill. The mud eventually won. I came home to clean my buttons. After cleaning I was shocked to find out that the convex button I found had a crown with the Letters GR in script. I want to thank CRUSADER for Id'ing my button. Considering how old it is to me it seems like it is in decent shape. Good enough to ID. I didn't want to over clean it so I just sort of dry brushed it. The flat buttons turned out nice as well. Didn't want to over clean. Also found what I believe to be a keyhole cover. I may be wrong...The brass piece has a crown with GR Patent on the front. Also think I found a Railroad tag. I was detecting close to a railroad so I was thinking this might be a railroad tag of some sort. Well hope you guys like the Pictures.

Yes that is a keyhole cover. And that button is a great display button. It should clean up real nice picking it with a tooth pic.

The more i think about it this button find from a historical standpoint is really important. Especially considering our town Natchez, Ms.

Re: 1830's English Militia Button In Mississippi?

After researching the history of the British Rule over Natchez, Ms I believe this button is older than what was first discussed. The British only controlled Natchez for 18 years. In 1779 Spain Seized Natchez. So this leads me to believe that the British were gone way before 1830. Here is a picture of the Uniforms of the British during that time period. Notice the 1750 Privates uniform. That hat is the same as what is on my button. I'm no professional, but I know the land and house on Land after talking to landowner today dates to the Middle to late 1700's. I believe this Button is earlier than 1830.

Re: Red coat Button In Mississippi?

Alright the verdict is in! War of 1812 or later is the button time period. This is coming from Crusader and Don Troiani! Don said more than likely shortly after the Battle of New Orleans! That my friends is rad! Also be looking for more pictures in the next Issue of Relic Hunter Magazine!
