Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

Hello Everyone!

I hope you've all been well. As many of you know already, I became a new father to a beautiful baby boy one month ago, so the last few weeks have largely consisted of changing diapers and grabbing power naps, but there were a few days when the weather was simply TOO nice to stay home. I pleaded with the wife, and out I went. ;)

You also may know that I've been pounding a great spot all winter that I call "Spoon Graveyard," due to the vast amount of spoons I've found there (I think 15 or 16, at this point). I've been determined to dig as much of it as I can before the warm weather and ticks arrive, so I've been jetting down there with every spare hour I have.

I've already pulled a TON of goodies out of the ground here, so it's starting to slow down a bit, but when I stay disciplined and work a strict grid the finds DO keep coming. Here are the highlights of what I've found the last few outings:

  • Two more Indian Heads -- an 1878 and 1902 (11 IHs from this site in all)
  • One large brooch with what looks like a giant ruby (imagine!) but must be costume jewelry (that Barber half is shown for scale)
  • One large lead toy stagecoach
  • One child's pocketknife (I've found five or so pocketknives here)
  • Another crotal bell (that's #5, I believe)
  • Ornate old sugar tongs
  • Two more spoons, one of which is silver plated in a pattern I've found there before
  • Several buttons, a buckle, and an old safety pin, as well as some kind of tiny charm or medal, and another harmonica reed fragment
  • One intact tin of "Symphony Face Powder"
  • Some sort of round whatsit that could be an ornate cap to something
  • A bunch of miscellaneous relics, including a toy cap gun, an iron snap buckle, a lantern piece, and some metal jar lids and whatsits
  • Two more mason jar lids with milk glass liners
  • My usual heap of bullets and shotgun shells (not pictured)

I may be getting toward the end of the season for this spot, so hopefully the spring/summer spots will be as kind as this one. Until then, enjoy the pics!

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Re: Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

Great finds for you as usual...At least you got out...Cool Pics and Relics, the Indians are looking in decent shape...Congrats on your finds...HH

Re: Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

Nice variety of finds, I really like the looks of the Indian Head cents.

your finds are very similar to the ones my wife and I have been diging
from an empty lot here in town.

In fact she found the same whats it as you have, It looks like it may have
been a broach, hers has rusted metal on the back and what appears to be
glue on the front center, like it may have had a stone or something on it.

Keep it up
Dan & Gina

Outstanding :) Love those bells--and IHs--man oh man you got a nice spot.

Thanks, Stoneseeker, Wyatt, Dan and Stryker. This site is easier on Indians than I've ever seen before here on LI. I think it's because it's pretty wooded and may not have seen a lot of fertilizer. The fields I've hunted before turned Indians and LCs into complete crud. This is a real joy. I'm really thankful.

Cheers and HH,
B

Very interesting. I had a feeling that might be what it was. Something about that wire edge was too nice for just any old whatsit....

Too bad the stone or whatever is missing. I would've liked to have seen that!

Thanks again.

Nice finds! Indians are fun, but so are different kinds of relics; I like the variety!

Re: Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

Congratulations on the new addition, Manley! :)

Your finds are great. You got a little bit of everything....even a diaper pin for your newborn's diapers! :D

I love the bell. It's gotta be one of my favorite relics to dig.

Thanks, Mona. It's funny -- one day before he was born I found the top piece of an old baby's rattle at the same spot. I knew fate was telling me something!! I've loved finding things like that at this spot, especially all the old toys. You can tell a real family was living there. Kinda nice.

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Re: Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

Check the March-April 2008 Issue of American Digger Magazine for an excellent article (w/pictures) on crotal bells. It is very informative and will help you identify your bells.

Re: Recent Finds From "Spoon Graveyard"

Thanks Bookfisher, BridgeEndFarm, Jim Klein, and of course, my "Spoon Pal" Treasure Tales. It was fun giving you all another update. Sometimes it's not until I actually see it all on the screen that I properly enjoy it myself! I'm always too busy lusting for the goodies I haven't found yet....

Cheers,
B

You've got a great site. Congratulations on the new baby and the old finds. The item you call a stagecoach may actually be more like a British Handsome Cab (see the rear step for the Footman to stand on?). Since it's a cast iron toy, I'm thinking maybe 1880's.

Good call! Very cool. I really love it. There's something special about finding those old toys....

Thanks,
B
