Really stumped. Some kind of explosive?

Found this in a wooded area in Anderson township in Ohio near Cincinnati.

It was partially in the surface and for some reason reminds me of a trip wire device that might explode or smoke

Please help so I can get back to the landowner with what it was

It looks like an ignition capacitor but it appears to big for that but if its older it would be bigger. Can you take some more pics perhaps from the top, bottom and backside?
