"Real Men Fill Their Holes"

Okay, I am "officially" launching a campaign to do what I can to "remind" our fellow treasure hunters to start filling in their holes after digging out their targets. All I have, so far, is an idea and a slogan.
The slogan is, "Real men fill their holes". The idea is that people will like the slogan and what it stands for and will want to help promote something that is in the best interest of all treasure hunters. Perhaps this slogan, with the skull and "crossed detectors", would be a cool looking T-shirt with a meaningful message.
If anyone wants to "steal" this idea and start making some Tees, or buttons, or bumper stickers- please feel free to do so. This should be a collaborative movement.
For those of you who are sticklers for filling in your holes, now you can fight back and do something about it. If nothing else, the public and park/beach authorities will know that many of us treasure hunters are out there doing the right thing. Even if I am the only one who likes this idea I am going to pursue it because it just feels like the right thing to do. If you want to help,
spread the word or toss in your own ideas.
I know that the "logo" seems gender specific but I still think the message is valid since most treasure hunters are men.
Thanks for listening and HH!

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

I would think for the most of us, filling our holes is second nature and an automatic response when we dig. For as easy and quick as it is to push your sod back, there really is NO excuse not to.

Don't think the skull and crossed detectors is such a good idea. Too much like looking like radical pirates or something...could scare the more conservative minded folks that already look at us as park destroyers.

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

Good luck with that. I have been trying to promote ethical detecting for years. It's kind of like the guy your driving behind, and a Mcdonalds bag goes flying out the window, They are just raised to not respect other people property. They just don't know any better.

Thank you for your efforts! :hello2:

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

My wife might laugh if I wore that slogan... ;D

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

If I wore that slogan on my t shirt or hat, it would NOT be a laughing matter for MY wife..... ::) ... something about the plural nature of "holes"... :laughing7:

Good points Al. I agree that most of us do the right thing and that it is a small number of people that are giving the hobby a bad image. Still, if I can get just 1 person to start filling in their holes it is worth this effort to me. HH!

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

"They just don't know any better"
Thanks! This is my point. Some don't know any better. Perhaps no one ever mentioned it to them. I'm not suggesting that we angrily confront people. This should be a peaceful, subtle, movement for change. HH!

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

I don't get it either. Slobs are slobs and just maybe you can convince someone on the edge and they won't become one.

When I hunt quail I pick up my shells as well. Not only do I not want to litter. I don't want others to know where I've found birds. Detecting is very much the same.

Good luck with your efforts.

Perhaps the slogan needs tweaking. It should get the message across but not be offensive. All suggestions are welcome. HH!

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

How about " I DIG THEM I FILL THEM "

I like it! Thanks! You also gave me another idea:

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

Hey compass, and the rest of you, who think this type campaigning (bumper stickers, shirts, and proudly letting " .... the public and park/beach authorities" see it, so they ".... will know that many of us treasure hunters are out there doing the right thing") is not going to advance your/our cause. The because no matter how much you stress the word "fill", guess what word they are going to focus on? "HOLES"! And you can sing and dance all you want that you are going to "fill" them, but so long as the knee jerk mental image is yahoos with shovels, you will simply advertise THAT, not your "filling".

Reminds me a funny (well, sad) story of a newbie who got his first metal detector. He reads various forums, and somehow decides he should go to his city hall/parks dept, to make sure detecting is ok in his cities parks. The gal at the counter fields his question, and seems stumped. She didn't even know what he was asking about. So he explained how he can find coins, trinkets, etc... So the lady combs through her books of rules, and could find nothing addressing this issue. So she turns to the man and says: "well I don't see why not. Go ahead". With that, the joyous newbie tells her "good! and I'll be sure to fill all my holes" (guess he thought he was a real winner with that line, eh?). As soon as the lady heard the word "holes", she tells the man: "hold on a second". She excused herself from the front counter and proceeded to walk down the hall conferring with various other managers. She then returned to the front desk and told the man "we're going to have to tell you no". When the newbie suspected this answer was arbitrary, he objected and said "but where is that written?". She handed him a brochure from the local utility co, that said "call before you dig". The man objected again and said: "but mam, that's talking about tractors, construction, pipelines, etc.... I'm only going to be digging a few inches for pete's sake". The lady leafed through the flyer again, hands it back to him and says: "sir, it doesn't say HOW deep, it just says 'all digging', so we're still going to have to tell you no". The man left more confused than when he'd begun.

So my advice is, keep a compaign like this, between us hobbyists. The LAST thing you want to go talking about with others, is holes and digging.

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

Tom, Your point is well taken. That is why I asked for feedback from others- to get all points of view. I agree with you- this "campaign" needs to be directed at other hobbyists.
I still like the T-shirt idea though. Many times I have come across others on the beach who don't cover their holes. I used to say something to them but it led to too many unpleasant confrontations and ruined some otherwise perfect hunts. A T-shirt with a message would be a more subtle way of spreading the word. Thank you for your input and HH!

Re: "Real Men Fill Their Holes"

I don't know....these things can backfire sometimes. Not sure it's a good idea to point out, or admit to the general public and law makers that you realize your hobby is causing some unsightly damage. And you just know many of them will grab hold of it and twist it around on you like this. :dontknow:
