There is a simple wash tub size trap where the rats climb up the plank to get some food, it has a hinge and trips on their weight. They drown in the water. Multiple kills!

I tried this for mice with no luck. Don’t rats swim?...

They can swim but if the sides are smooth plastic they can`t get out and drown.

We used to call those "Cabin traps". Five gallon pail with 6" of water in the bottom. Put a soda can wiped in peanut butter lengthwise on a cross wire through the rim of the bucket and a little plank from the floor to the pail rim. They climb up, reach for the can - which spins - and fall they into the water. They eventually tire out from treading water. Until enough carcasses make a "raft".

one change needed. instead of just a bucket, it needs a funnel and an electric grinder for them to land in.
if not for the smell, I'd suggest acid in the bottom of the bucket
