✅ SOLVED Ratchet?

I found this at a site that spans many years, between about 1850 and 1939. Home was on an 1850 map, 1870 map and a 1939 Ariel view. Next Ariel was 1941 and the home was gone.

To me it looks like a rachet, but the tapered handle has me scratching my head.

Many early wrenches and such had pointed/tapered handles, so they could be used to align bolt holes in two pieces of heavy metal by sticking the point into the holes and prying to align them to get the bolt in.

They were used mainly by iron workers and were called spud wrenches and are still used today, but mechanics used them as well.

I have never seen this with a ratchet but it would work the same only using a socket.

I thought tie rod end at one point, but the shaft is square and much too tapered for any tie rod end I've ever seen. I looked up tie rod ends for old Fords and didn't find anything like it.

Hammer it into a fence post, or a barn beam.
Then the loop of the gate hinge goes over the pin.
So you have 1/2 a gate hinge.

I have some in the shop, dug many, have a few more that are in barn beams.
