Rare Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

Re: Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

I never would have thought that piece could have turned out like that. Excellent work!

Re: Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

amazing :o
I first thought the pix were a dug piece and a nondug collection piece
thanks Breezie for posting and Congrats on the find :D
CBG, appreciate the knowledgeable info on the electrolysis process

Re: Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

WOW, that is the best example of electrolysis I've ever seen. Way to go!!!

Re: Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

Hey Everyone, thank you for the kudos on Sambo.
TheCannonballGuy, thank you for posting to let everyone know about the low amperage, which was one of my problems, plus it was my first attempt at electrolysis. Also, as TCG said, the soil was kind to this cap gun. The soil was somewhat sandy on top, yet had that good ole North Carolina orange clay underneath, so basically the cap gun had been encased in a 'brick.'
The cap gun will work now, although it will be for display, not play. The original piece is there, but probably would not take very much activity.
I plan to put Sambo in a display case with my Slave Trade Bracelet, 15th Century Spectacle Buckle, and NC Officer's Staff Button. They are my 4 favorite finds. ;D
TCG, thank you again for a job well done :headbang:

Breezie

CannonBallGuy, what did you use for an anode? Did you take any pics? Any chance of a diagram? What solution do you use?

Re: Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

Very impressive Cannonballguy. How many hours/days did it take to get it back to that state?
Breezie-I read your original post when you first found this piece. I though to myself, "darn it's too bad that gun is so corroded, thats one sweet find," and now to see it cleaned up like that, well, it just makes me smile. Congrats on such a great find. I love it.

Re: Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

A very interesting thread! The toy gun turned out to be an ugly duckling of a story. Thanks for sharing.

Dig, it makes me smile too; my teeth are dry from smiling. It's totally amazing to me, and TheCannonballGuy certainly knows his electrolysis. I think TCG told me it took 7 hours on a 1/2 amp. When I did it, I had my car charger bumped up to 2 amps, which was not 'cooking' it from the inside out. The way he explained to me was, the outside layer of rust acts as an insulator, thus softening the rust under the outer layer. Whenever it is removed, it basically looks like it did when you put it in, but when you touch the outside crust, all the rust falls off except for minute areas around lettering, etc. If I'm not correct, I hope TCG will correct me. The finishing process as he stated above is most important, and the icing on the cake!

Thanks to everyone for their kinds words. I certainly appreciate it. Breezie

Creskol, Sambo says :hello2: Did the marbles come in the mouth or did you put them there? I'd like to see some more pics. Do you know what they are? They look like bottle openers. Breezie

Re: Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

The ball was with it when I dug it. They are both the same one, showing with and without the the ball in place. It only measures 1 inch wide by 1 1/4 inches tall. Both pieces are non-magnetic, heavy as lead, but might be pewter?

totally amazing find and restoration! WOW!

Re: Sambo Cap Gun-1897-Before & After Pics

Creskol, Oh, I see now; it was an optical illusion or either my tired eyes LOL. Now that I have the correct perspective on the pic, it looks to be an antique 'shooter marble holder.'

Thanks HeavyMetal and Still water! :hello2:
