KKC got out today to the site we last week. Within the first 5 minutes, I got a perfect copper signal. I was thrilled to see this whole copper smoking pipe pop out. I have been doing research and can't find much about the date of this pipe or smoking pipes being made of copper. It looks like a late-18th century one. :dontknow: Any help, I would appreciate. I have seen many clay pipes being found around Colonial America, but have never seen anyone find/post a copper one. It was found in the exact area where all the Colonial coins were being dug, so it could be a period find. :dontknow:

It was a relic day for me, but I will take it. :icon_thumleft:

Keep the passion high!

Kirk :hello:

Hey Kirk,

Very cool find. Those PA fields continue to produce some great finds. I think Silver Searcher got it right with his candle snuffer ID. Keep the finds coming!

Kirk,
SS may be right on the candle snuffer. :dontknow: Something to consider.
Is there a hole in the cone shaped piece to allow air into the tube in order to inhale the marijuana tobacco?
If not, it may be a snuffer.
Just a thought.

Hey, Doug, it is definitely a copper smoking pipe. There is a small hole at the bottom of the pipe bowl. When I run water into the bowl, it empties out through the bore end. This colonist took one puff and probably dropped it because of the heat. :laughing7: Then I come along 220 years later. :laughing9:

Re: Fully Intact Copper Smoking Pipe (18th Century?)

Check into trade pipe, seen one in a museum it was traded to Indians, copper was to hot to hold and it had a wood end over part of that copper stem.

Re: Fully Intact Copper Smoking Pipe (18th Century?)

I agree with silver searcher on it being a sconce or candle snuffer.

Wow, Rick, that site is very interesting. Like I have stated, I could not find any articles on copper smoking pipes. Just from that, I have concluded that it is a rare item. You have brought up a great point. This is a possible trade pipe? :dontknow: :icon_scratch: If so, this could very well be one of the top relics recovered from this site. Amazing!

Re: Fully Intact Copper Smoking Pipe (Trade Pipe?)

:o I don't know what that dude was smokin' but when he fired it up , copper conducts heat = ouch ::) :dontknow: :laughing9: early prototype Woodstock pipe , better than tin foil :laughing7: Very sheik 8) 8)

Re: Fully Intact 18th Century Copper Smoking Pipe

I just got off the phone with SC Keith and he is very confident that it is from the 18th century. He told me that he has found many 1700s whole pipes that had the similar pipe bowl design. This is my first smoking pipe artifact. We do not even find pieces of them in the fields and I get this rare whole copper one. This is why I love relic hunting.

Re: Fully Intact 18th Century Copper Smoking Pipe

Awesome find!! I don't think I have ever seen any like that! That is in excellent condition..Congrats!

Re: Fully Intact 18th Century Copper Smoking Pipe

I'd hate to be the smoker... copper especially when burned and inhaled can be quite toxic...
