Archaeologists at Historic Jamestowne unearthed a new stream of unusually rare artifacts Monday while exploring the bottom of a well that may have been dug under Capt. John Smith's leadership nearly 400 years ago.

William Kelso, director of archaeology, said a small lead tag with the words "JAMES TOWNE" stamped into the metal is one of the greatest artifacts found so far at the historic site. Kelso said the 1 x 2 inch tag may be the equivalent of a Colonial luggage tag for packages bound for the first permanent English settlement in America.

An ornate lead halberd decorated with the crest of Lord de la Ware was also discovered. A halberd consists of an axe blade topped with a spike mounted on a long shaft with a hook or thorn on the back side of the blade. According to Bly Straube, curator, about fifty halberdiers dressed in red processed in front of Lord de la Ware during his first tour of Jamestown when he arrived in 1610.

Other discoveries included a man's fancy leather shoe with a makeshift repair, a hammer, more shoes and leather items and pieces of a Bartmann jug. More artifacts will be excavated from the well during the next few days until archaeologists reach the bottom.

My ancestors were there. Maybe they'll uncover something
with my name on it.

This is way to cool. You never know what you can find at the bottom of old wells.
