Been a couple of years since the original post but oh well. Google Earth still does not show Rangiriri clearly, just like my home town of Huntly which is just up river (though south).
This site unfortunately is protected as a historic site and no digging is allowed. There are sites around though where people can and have hunted. The odd cannonball and bullet has been found on the surrounding farmland but you would need to get permission.
Even our old gold mining sites are protected under the Historic Places Act and it is hard to find places to search.
There are still some old redoubts, pa sites about and Google Earth may show them.
