Man! I posted some things a week or so back that looked like that and got rocked to death. You have agriculture tools and an adze bit that I see. They are crude made pieces , but I think used more than once. What state are you in? If you are from my state, I'll tell you what I think they are. If not, I'll let another have it. I don't want to start naming tools and start a big argument . I, personally, say for sure you have some interesting stuff. Crude ugly tools are my favorite. It takes lots of field time to recognize them. I, truly don't hunt artifacts for monetary value. I love the nice pretty pieces, don't get me wrong. However, the ones that get passed in the field by most are my favorite. They take study time and you have none to few references. I said that backwards on purpose because you are lucky to find help on these pieces. If figured out, you have gained knowledge no one else has, and a clue as to where nicer stuff is.

Looks like quarry stones to me. Sometimes they would find rocks for the future tools they were going to make. They would take a flake or two off then save them if they were good. That way they would have them if they needed to make a item. Secondary work is a must on most artifacts, if it doesnt show then it is a preform or just a rock waiting for something to happen. Thanks for the view. rock

NC field hunter, You always post cool stuff and can identify and describe things I can only guess about. Next time somebody rocks you just let me know and we'll give their name to a mexican drug lord here( we have mexican mafia, zeta and Sinoloa, I think. You can tell by the lady with the sombrero tattooed on their forearm), tell him they used his woman and said bad things about his mama and then we'll send flowers to the funeral. Teach them to mess with you.

Nah dude! Thanks for the offer, but,.... It don't bother me that bad!lol! When I was about 10, I had, well , still have , a quartz that I think looks like an eagle on perch. He has flakes missing also. I took it to an old man just knowing he was going to say , yep, Indian eagle effigy! Instead, he said " son , do you plan on keeping this or selling it?" I replied , keep it! What he told me," if it is in your collection, it can be what the hell you want it to be". Guess I took that to heart in a few cases.

I still see a bird! Just mother natures bird now.

On thing I've learned in 40 years of artifact hunting, if you bring pieces like that home, soon your large piles of junk rocks will hide all your good stuff.

I'm not saying they weren't used for anything, but if it is hard to tell, and the material is questionable, I just leave them be.

When my Dad began hunting in the late 40s, he didn't even keep broken points. That's going a little too far I believe, but If I can't see an obvious tool or artifact, I leave it....and I still have too many piles layin around! :)

Well put. I do the same. I leave plenty of definate artifacts right where they are. If I have no examples of a tool then of course. But sometimes I already have several nice ones and I see no need to bring home deteriorated or broken ones. Points I keep broke or not.

You are right!! However, I think a person needs to be able to ID quick crude tools/points, unfinished things, and work that was probably a novices' work. That requires bringing a lot of ugly crappy "rocks" in, clean them up and study them. Take your studies back to the field with you, and notice repetitive notches, concaveness, convex ness and so on. Being able to I'd crap makes the nice stuff really stand out. If we don't take chances on rough artifacts, we will never learn any thing. My dad is like yours, I have picked stuff up behind him too many times. I always tell him, you had may as well be hunting Easter eggs. Oooooh whee! That burns him up. Lol.

I can respect what you said. You have "examples" that tells me that you have researched your stuff .

Yeah..if Im not sure I definitely hold on to it until I am. But after a while I got pretty quick at doing my deductions and making ID's on the fly.You just get to know your stuff...ya know..ha ha
