I guess you just opened the preview image at google - right?
You have to click it and go to the website. Happens most on giffy gifs. You have to click again and than opens a popup which says download.

I am trying, but not having much luck. It is a shame because there are some funny ones, I just don't recognize the format.

From here (see image below) it is often not possible to save the gif´s and also on JPG´s you get only the small resolution!
