I know of a couple of old farm houses in my area that had spring houses built of Missouri limestone. They are built over the stream just coming out of the spring and had concrete floors which the cold spring water would run across a couple inches deep year round. Entering and exiting through grates in the wall.This used to be a milkhouse. The farmer would fill milk cans and place them in the running water to keep them cool until they were picked up.
Today this water wheel is attached to a generator that powers up the farmhouse and outer buildings.
