Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Does rain deter you from metal detecting? Or, do you do like me and just wrap your detector in plastic etc. I know that the guys with waterproof machines detect in water, but what about the rest of you? I have found that plastic ziplock bags, rubber bands and tape work wonders.

But, are you afraid to get wet, or do you just do the damm thing!?

My hunt this weekend is 40% chance rain, but I simply don't care, I'll be out there!:tongue3:

No, I stay inside when it’s raining. I have had to work to many times out in the rain to want to play in it on my own time.

I have only been caught once ( It hasn’t rain much in South Texas lately) by the rain while detecting. Luckily I was in my yard and I or the detector didn’t get soaked before I made it inside.

Now I keep a zip lock bag covering my metal detector all the time. Not so much as to keep it from getting wet from rain, but for keeping it clean from dirty hands and to keep it dry when washing the coil with the water hose.

I’m to cheap to buy a fancy cover for the metal detector. I just put a new baggie on whenever I do a battery change.

If I'm hunting the beach, I don't care if it rains because I'm probably in the water any way. If I'm land hunting, I'm done when the drops start. I'm not crawling back into my truck soaking wet and covered in mud.

If it's a planned hunt with other people involved, I'll just suck it up and do it, but it's not something I enjoy....especially when it's cold out. That's one of the reasons I live here in San Diego! Like others have said, at the beach with a water machine and dressed for the occasion, sure, let it rain and have the wind blow. I'll have the place to myself!

I will hunt in brief intervals of rain. I have a weather cover that I use all the time and it keeps my machine dry. The worst part is making sure that everything is completely dried out after the hunt. Just like a rifle, if you use it in the rain you have to take extra care of it. Cover comes off and is put out to dry. Battery comes out to be sure no moisture remains in the control box, etc. The machine is wiped down and put in a special place to dry out. Because of the extra work I don't prefer to hunt rainy weather. H Digs!

I go out rain or shine whenever I am ready I go. My detector is waterproof but the rain doesn't bother me other than getting a bit muddy digging targets. I usually have to clean up my detector when done, especially the screen from smudges of mud on it. I was out the other day and it rained enough to make the grass wet and a bit muddy when I filled in my holes

I like hunting in the rain. Nobody in the park to bother me. I use a baggie over the control box on a Silver uMax and have at it. I put a Carhart jacket on to shed the rain and keep my Pro Pointer in the pocket. Now, add lightning and I am headed for the car. I am a freshwater hunter so getting wet is normal.

I keep baggies, a rain coat and rain bonnet in the car. If I'm in the mood to hunt, and there isn't thunder or lightening, I'll usually keep hunting until my feet get too soggy, or so heavy with mud that I can't lift them anymore.

I wear a pair of Tyvek paper overalls I buy at the local paint store. They work fairly well to keep out the rain. The rest of the gear is easily protected with rain covers. This said, I don't go out if there is lightning. That's asking for a real strike!

I do sometimes if the place looks really good. I use a goretex raincoat with the sandwich bag also and have it on the detector all the time anyway just in case I get caught out.

I always prefer the rain...Found my first Silver in a bad storm..plus its a good time to hit up normally busy parks! Its easy now that i have an ATP..But i used to wrapp up my ACE with ziplocks and it did the job just fine!...I just wish tehy would make a water proof pinpointer...My New one is already got mud inside the speaker and where the button is.

A little rain don't bother me beach hunting, the lightening scares the pee outta me!
If I can hear the strikes (electrical activity), through my excel, it's too close!

Looks liek I lucked out actually. The rain is predicted to hold off until late evening. Hitting a ghost town from 1860s to 1910 with exclusive permission!

I like hunting in the rain too because nobody bothers you. They won't get wet to see what your doing.

That definitely means its time to get the hell outta Dodge! I have had some similar and scary times fishing. Once while fly fishing for bass with a thunderstorm fast approaching and me just taking that one more cast, I cast the line out and it just floated in the air and took forever to come down to the water. At the same time I heard the lightning detector sounding off at the baseball field right nearby. I got outta there quick. When I got to the boat landing it has an AM radio tower right next to the ramp. There were 20 foot electrical streamers coming off the top of the tower and the air was crackling all around it! I don't screw around anymore with lightning storms! Detecting in the rain yes! Lightning NO!

The best piece of kit I have for metal detecting in the rain is a pair of trousers with knee pad inserts.

You can buy the Vibraprobe which is waterproof to 100ft, unlike the Garrett Propointer.

I have a Cordura "waterproof" cover it keeps the dirt out , but I'm leery about hunting in the rain. I lost a motherboard in my XLT due to condensation.
