Here is what gets interesting out Belgium gold reserves 50 11.750 kilo bars went missing? that is about 587 kilos of gold today's value is shy of about 50 million?

This gold disappeared before arriving in Berlin to remelt into fake 1938 Berlin bars. We know this from the bank of France records as the gold was held in vaults of Bank of France in Paris does not tally up in what smeltered in Berlin.

Here is document that might be of interest as two stories are connected to the claims of Peter Fleig that he told the French.

The last document I posted was of go ahead for construction of bunker in northern Italy in 1944 . This has connection to one of claims by Peter Fleig. If he was to be believed.

What is interesting Peter Fleig claimed connection of the Rommel treasure to Hermann Julius Walther Rauff.

Below is picture Hermann Julius Walther Rauff being arrested in 1945.

Hermann Julius Walther Rauff, also Walther Rauff (19 June 1906 – 14 May 1984) was a mid-ranking SS commander in Nazi Germany.

From January 1938, he was an aide of Reinhard Heydrich firstly in the Security Service (Sicherheitsdienst or SD), later in the Reich Security Main Office. He worked for the Federal Intelligence Service of West Germany (Bundesnachrichtendienst) between 1958 and 1962.

By a great twist of irony the Nazi war criminal was subsequently employed by the Mossad, the Israeli secret service.

He sailed to South America in December 1949 and landed in Ecuador, initially living in Quito. He was described in a documentary on the History Channel as one of the 7 most dangerous Nazis who fled to South America after World War II.

Rauff escaped an Allied internment camp in Italy and then was able to hide in Italian monasteries. ( One of Peter Fleig.claimed he aided a high ranking Nazi official escalope Prisoner of War camp by changing clothes. the High ranking Nazi gave him three treasure maps to three locations where looted SS treasure was hidden. )

Rauff was able to live in Quito, for almost ten years after World War II, departing in 1958 and travelling to Chile before returning to Germany in 1960 to collect his Nazi pension. After this Rauff was then recruited by Augusto Pinochet. Rauff played a role in the creation of the Chilean internal security apparatus during the military dictatorship. His funeral in Santiago, Chile, was attended by several former Nazis.

Rauff is accused of being responsible for nearly 100,000 deaths during World War II. Among other actions, he was instrumental in the use of mobile gas chambers for the execution of prisoners. He was arrested in 1945, but subsequently escaped and was never brought to trial.

In 1943 he extorted from the Jewish community in Tunisia 60 hundred weight in gold about 3000 kilograms approximately 250 million in gold.

Peter Fleigh aka Walter Kirner was a Corporal in the SS who applied for a visa to visit Corsica in 1948 but was arrested and interrogated by the French. The French then launched a dive investigation costing one million Francs to try and find it.

A CHICAGO Daily News correspondent says that the Bey of Tunis has bitterly complained that the Germans looted his personal treasure, including seven tons of gold bullion. During the six months since the Allied landings, 11,000,000 tons of -shipping entered the occupied ports of North Africa. Despite persistent enemy attempts to cut the sea supply lines, shipping losses were comparatively light.

Bey of Tunis Muhammad VII al-Munsif, is pictured below. was the Bey of Tunis between 19 June 1942 and 14 May 1943. He was the penultimate ruler of the Husainid dynasty.

Axis troops arrived in Tunisia on 16 November 1942 and the Tunisian Campaign turned much of the country into a battlefield. Moncef Bey was confronted by demands from Pétain to remain loyal to France and from Roosevelt to allow free passage for Allied troops. Moncef Bey proclaimed Tunisian neutrality while secretly informing Roosevelt that Tunisia would support the Allies.

He also refused an offer from the Italian ambassador Bombieri to repudiate the Treaty of Bardo and enter into a new treaty with Italy.

His predecessor Ahmed Bey was often referred to as 'the Bey of the French' and signed several decrees prepared by the Vichy regime which were detrimental to the Jewish community in Tunisia. Moncef Bey on the other hand was referred to as 'the Protector of the Jews' and made efforts to ensure that these decrees were not put into effect.

He also refused to sign any other anti-Jewish decrees, including those requiring Jews to wear the yellow star, or to undertake forced labour, or to exclude Jews from certain activities. Between November 1942 and May 1943, while Axis troops occupied the country, he intervened repeatedly to protect his people, particularly the Jewish community, from their exactions.

But not enough for Walther Rauff with Vans of death Thousands of Jews was gassed in mobile gas vans.

So there was possible much more looted in Tunisia than first thought where did that gold go?

Thanks for input. I did not know that. I chatted with Steven J. Charbonneu many years ago. Walter Rauff was a ruthless murderer that got away with war crimes. But he was not only one. Even today there are well established families in South America who wealth was based on what their ancestors looted from WW2.

In 1998 Argentina I got drugged and in Bolivia I had colt 45 shoved in my mouth. I was given information from court case against the CIA to release knowledge of Vatican involvement of assisting Nazi war criminals moving gold through the Vatican bank. Following the Nazi rat lines to south America.

As Rommel treasure. The treasure was nothing to do with Rommel. He was just a very good general caught up WW2 on losing side. He was not a yes man and not trusted by Hitler. That aside there was looting going on.

There is 24 tons of gold. Some of it was melted loot from Tunisia added to gold reserves in the bank of Italy. As the Allies moved north. When Italy surrendered the German sized all the gold in bank of Italy.

There was two bunkers in northern Italy one acted as depository the other active as underground smelter to recast the bars to hide their stolen origins. then smuggled into Austria and Switzerland. By that time in the war many Nazis knew the game was up and started to save their own skins.

I suspect the whole Rommel treasure story was diversion story from where the gold really went.

But there was few more main players in this game of deceit. The two depositories was used store than treasure was smuggled over the mountains in Austria on the way to Germany other item smuggled through network of smugglers into Switzerland

The bunker was strongly related to the German recovery of gold from the Macugnaga mines. SS-Obergruppenführer Karl Wolff, a German SS commandant in the Italian territory, ordered Captain Joseph Voettler, from the German SS garrison in Cernobbio, province of Como, to take direct control on the Italian-Swiss border and also to guarantee a safe way to export to Germany goods and machinery required by RuK (Rüstung und Kriegsproduktion), a ministry of armament and war production of the Italian Social Republic in the north of Italy.

Here is pictures of part of bunker system nothing no gold in them today. Part of tunnel system collapsed. they are as far as I know not open to the public today.

Captain Voettler was also instructed by Wolff to find in Switzerland a license for the distillation of gold, making possible the transportation of the semi-finished materials directly over the border. Voettler decided to trade by train because trucks were usually intercepted by planes which checked the zone every day with two "Spitfires" named "Pippo" by the locals.

Captain Voettler found an alternative method of sending these materials to Mendrisio, using the more irregular train times on the railway of Valmorea.

It was not just ore passing through this bunker either. It was also used to mask and erase the original identity of plundered gold before being smuggled into Switzerland.

The tripartite Gold commission I think from memory Reading that about 80 tons of Italian gold ended up in Switzerland.
The agency That was the precursor of the CIA has records of what was recovered.

The Germans took control of the gold reserves after the armistice of September 8, 1943 The Germans stole 21.7 tonnes of gold, leaving the Bank of Italy with only 22 tonnes.

In 1933 the Bank of Italy reserves exceeded 561 tonnes, but by the time the country entered the Second World War substantial sales had reduced the stock to 106 tonnes. In 1943 the reserves were back up to around 121 tonnes, until 15.8 tonnes were transferred to the BIS, reducing them to 105 tonnes. ( Adding to these gold reserves was looted gold from Jews in Italy and Tunisia. )

The Allies returned most of the looted gold to Italy, but 24 tonnes are still missing. The Bank of Italy's gold reserves gradually increased after the war, and by the end of 1958, they totaled 244 tonnes

The 24 tonnes of gold was bone of contention between Italy and West Germany for years. Until 1978 the Italian government dropped its claim against Germany?

Enter Herbert Kappler (23 September 1907 – 9 February 1978) was a key German SS functionary and war criminal during the Nazi era. He served as head of German police and security services (Sicherheitspolizei and SD) in Rome during the Second World War and was responsible for the Ardeatine massacre.

This was the same massacre Carl Wolff was implicated in. Following the end of the war, Kappler stood trial in Italy and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He escaped from prison shortly before his death in West Germany in 1978.

His story of how a sick old man escape prison hospital has two versions. The official public version below.

In 1975, at the age of sixty-eight, Kappler was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Appeals by both his wife and the West German government for compassionate release were denied by Italian authorities but did earn him a transfer to a hospital in 1976.

Due to Kappler's deteriorating condition and his wife's nursing skills, Anneliese Kappler was allowed almost unlimited access to him. On a visit in August 1977, she carried him out in a large suitcase (Kappler weighed about 47 kg (104 lb) at the time) and escaped to West Germany, assisted by apparently unwitting Carabinieri member.

That was the official version of advents but there is another version

The Washington post was claims Herbert Kappler Dying made a deal with Italian government to reveal what happened to the missing gold.

It was the official story of his escape was sham because the Italian public would not accept their government making a deal with a Nazi war criminal for 24 tons of gold.

So it was staged for his escape to West Germany . Italy got the gold. Secretly by passing The Tripartite Gold Commission (TGC) was a panel established in 1946 by the United States, United Kingdom, and France to recover gold stolen by Nazi Germany and return it to its rightful owners. The TGC's goals were :Review and adjudicate claims from governments for the restitution of looted gold. Ensure that each claimant country received restitution in proportion to its loss.

The CIA was aware of these claims but when the documents was declassified it was only a newspaper article by the Washington post. Any official comments are still classified.

The out come of these searches for gold by the Italian secret service was and still is Omissis ( Classified )

The Italian secret service documents are classified only releasing part of an earlier search relating to Rommel's treasure orchestrated by surprise surprise Peter Fleigh aka Walter Kirner in 1960

Despite demands that Kappler be returned to Italy, the West German authorities refused to extradite him and did not prosecute him for any further war crimes, reportedly owing to his ill-health. ( Germany was happy they did not have to pay back 24 tons of gold to Italy.)

Vittorio Lattanzio below resigned from his position as Minister of Defense in the aftermath of this sham escape. .Lattanzio served as minister of defence (1976–1977) in the Andreotti III Cabinet. He would face harsh criticism for his role as minister of defence after convicted Nazi Herbert Kappler escaped from Italian custody in 1977 to find sanctuary in West Germany.

He would ultimately resign from this position due to the scandal, but go on to take different cabinet level positions. Just sham cabinet reshuffle.

Six months after his escape, Kappler died at home in Soltau, on 9 February 1978, aged 70. ( he got what he wanted to die in Germany )

Amazing enough Italy dropped its claim against West Germany for missing gold. The Italian Government if it claimed publicly the recovery of a secret nazi cache of stolen bank of Italy bullion. There would be claims from surviving Italian and Tunisian Jews, but a possible claim by the Tunisian government for 8 tons of missing gold. ( This way they got to keep all the recovered gold. If they had gone through tripartite commission they would have deal with claims against the bank of Italy by Jews and Tunisians )

Peter Fleigh aka Walter Kirner in claimed three locations two hidden in bunkers and alleged treasure dropped into the sea off Corsica to the French. He did not know the full story but he started the famous Rommel treasure search while the real story faded from view.

The gold dumped off Corsica was sham to hide the fact some of gold was misappropriated by Nazis opening bank accounts in Switzerland knowing the Nazi cause was finished.
