For lack of a better title I used the word quirks. What I am curious about is, does anybody here have a superstition or ritual connected to your artifact hunting?
I know it may sound weird but if I pick up a piece I suspect may be an indian artifact and decide it isn't, I can't just drop it. I have to carry it to the edge of the field. Then I can toss it.
And, with metal detecting I always wish my hunting partners "Good Providence". And, if I detect by myself I imagine my brother wishing me the same.
Well, now you know I'm a crazy old f**t. Anybody else willing to admit the same?

thanks newt. i agree with you
i keep only about one out of every five pieces that come from my field
every person that hunts there keeps what they find
earlier this season a friend took his 9 year old grand daughter out to the field for her first hunt of her life
she found a broke bone birds head right next to the road
i wish i would have been there to take a picture, not only of the bird but of her smiling face
she also got a real kick out of the buffalo teeth she found

I always simply say a prayer. It might seem silly to pray about finding an artifact but my belief is that God is glad at answering our prayers so long as we give him thanks. Everytime I find an artifact I give him thanks, when I spend hours and don't find one then I believe he is building my patience.

Not silly at all. I seem to find more when I am grateful. I also give up a prayer of thanks for every animal I harvest as well. Good post Larson. I like your flippin sticks. They look good for field hunting. :icon_sunny:

I always wondered if others did the same things that I do. I have a "unique" walking stick made from an old golf club (driver). I basically cut the head off of it and made the cut end a little more pointed to help with flipping rocks. It already has a good comfortable grip at the other end. I take it every time I go arrowhead hunting. I also have a m-60 ammo belt bag that I put around my neck. It is great for holding my finds.

I always hold the first arrowhead that I find in my hand. Everything else goes into my ammo bag.

I also give thanks to the Lord and the ancients for allowing me to find the artifacts. I do this every time I find an artifact. I just think that it is important to give thanks.

I think that burying or sprinkling tobacco on the field as an offering is a pretty cool idea.

Great thread!
