Questions on Detecting the Winter Beaches

Hello Folks!

I really love this site! After several months of "browsing" I just now registered.

I'm off to Martha's Vineyard next week for several days. Although it is bitter cold here in New England, I'm hoping to do some beach detecting. I have a White's IDX PRO (I think this model is now obsolete). It works pretty good although the indicator face (IRON/GOLD/COINS) stopped working some time ago.

Any suggestions on detecting the winter beach? I strictly detect soft sand... I suppose I fear that goodies are harder to come by in the winter since the beaches are empty.

part of that is true... just dig everything an move a little slower an listen for the deeper targets. when there are tons of recent drops people move fast trying to get the next find passing over deeper finds. just last week I got 3 silvers, 1 ring, 1 charm,1 ear ring back, the ring had been in the wet sand for some time an the charm was well over 10" deep an this was at a beach that gets hunted I bet everyday, the day I found these I saw 7 people hunting, so there is stuff to be found even when the crowds aren't there, just got to do things a little diffrent.

You have a good machine. If you can set your discriminate manually without the digital meter, I would set it at a low level to maybe only filter out small pieces of foil and dig every target. Like stated above, you can find some deep targets if you go slower and take your time and your machine is a deep seeker which yours is.

The meter is a good thing to look at but you will probably find more goodies now that it isn't working because you will dig more signals that you may have passed up before. I probably dig at least 10 pieces of trash for every good target because I look mainly for gold items. Gold signals in the same range of trash on most machines and if you filter out trash, you filter out the gold except for some of the larger rings.

Good luck.
