Halves are 1964 and before (90% silver), 1965-1970 inclusive (40%). Dimes and quarters are 1964 and before (90%). Newer coins may be silver if they are proof coins but they will probably stick out by being more shiny.

1971 through 1978 quarters, dimes, and halves are 90% silver. Pre-1971 quarters, dimes, and halves are clad with copper and nickel. 1975 halves are 100% silver. 1971 halves are also 100% silver. I apologize for thripp giving you false information, very tricky indeed thripp. Hope this helps. HH.

Don't forget nickels, which are 91.6% silver before 1946.

Arent some coins gold?

The 1943 Cent because of WWII was made in 100% silver, and is probably worth 100 + just in silver weight if you find it

Oh and all Presidential Coins (gold dollars) are made in real gold. Buy as many as you can and hoard them. They have 1.6 ounces of 24KT gold in them!

War nickels are like 35% silver 1941 to 45 if memory servers me correctly. Was there silver in buffalo nickels?

One last addition, all pennies made after 1982 are the ones you want to keep. They are 25% silver and worth $5 a piece with todays spot!

Any wheat pennies were minted from super pressure packed whole wheat grain, through a process known as 'coinifization'. They are very hard to find because most have either biodegraded, were eaten by crows, or blended into smoothies by new-age hippies.

You are thinking of the great white buffalo. Not silver, just white.

Some 1975 halves are minted in plutonium 238. I check all my halves rolls and boxes with a gamma ray camera before opening. Be safe out there.

It is a shame that someone that is new to this cannot even ask a simple question. We must always remember someone had to teach us.

On some halves kennedy looks a bit more handsome than on others. Those are the ones made of silver

Fistfulladirt gave a very helpful answer. Others just joking. Thread will probably give newbs the idea to do a little basic research first.

Thanks for the replies, I am new to this I mostly metal detect and I have done a little research on the subject but wasn't sure of somethings. I recently found a 1937 mercury dime about 7" deep from what a few on here said it should be silver.
