I've never "coin roll hunted" but I wanna give it a try. So my question is, How do you go about it? Can you go to any bank and ask for rolls of coins? or do you get boxes?(As I saw a post that said box of coins)
Also after you have split the roll, searched it, do you just roll it back up(with the correct change of course) and take it back to the bank?
Do you have to have an account at the bank in order to do this?
How much usually comes in a box of coins?

It's pretty straight forward. Go to the bank, ask for whatever you want. They either have it or they don't. Some banks will ask if you have an account. If you do have an account, they will usually give you however much change you want. They may not have half dollars, but I think it's always best to ask. If you really want to hunt a lot of change, you'll want to search boxes. Banks typically receive coins in boxes, and most banks will order boxes for you, although some charge a a small fee. Boxes of halves are $500. Quarters are $500. Dimes are $250. Nickels are $100. Pennies are $25. I don't know how much dollar boxes are. When you're done, wrap 'em up and return them, preferably to a bank different from the bank you bought them from. Finding a good dump bank or two is really important. Some banks have free coin counting machines, so you don't even have to rewrap them. If you can find one of those, you're home free. If you can't, make sure you don't bring too much change to your dump bank all at once. There are so many variables in coin roll hunting. Finds vary greatly from region to region. Customer service varies from bank to bank and from branch to branch. You never know what you'll find. Persistence is what pays off. Enjoy the hunt!

Let us know how it turns out GF and good luck.

thats about it. i did my first coin roll hunt over the weekend. walked into the bank with my mom, aksed for $20 in nickels, handed over my $20 and got the rolls. she acted like it was no big deal! :)

One word of warning. You'll probably have to face tellers like this every time you want coins:

"Hi. May I help you....Oh my God! You want how many pennies? What for? To search? What's wrong with you? Why would anyone want pennies? Hey, everyone! Look at this kid. He wants to exchange his cash for pennies. hahahaha. And you know why? To search for 'cool' coins. He wants twenty dollars in pennies! He's crazy! hahaha. What's wrong with you, kid? This is a bank, not a playground. Here, take your stupid pennies and never come back!"

;D

Just kidding. (sorry, sorry, I couldn't resist) There are a few lousy tellers out there, but there are plenty more nice ones. Get to know them, and remember that they're your link to the coins. Have fun searching, and please! keep us updated on your finds!

If you go into a bank and ask for half dollars, the teller might ask if you have an account there. If she does, use these magic words:

"most banks are glad to get rid of their half dollars." Works almost everytime. Have seen the demeanor of tellers change on the spot after saying that phrase and almost all hand them over. (there were two real crab cakes that did not let me have the halves even after I said that, but they are the exception.)

Thanks for all the info guys, I'll probably get a roll when I get paid this week. I'll post what I find, if anything :P

Keep plugging away if your roll turns out to be a skunk. Some of us have gone thru hundreds of rolls and not found one silver coin. It's a hit or miss game. If you find one good roll, clean the bank out if you can. Some of us have found rolls of solid silver, like somebody turned in all the coins they had been saving. Good luck!

Hey coinlover!

Glad to see another one of us kids join the site and take up the hobby!

Look for the post that says "BEGGINERS EXPLANATIONS TO COIN ROLL HUNTING" in this coin roll hunting section of the forum. It should help.

hi, glad to join the forum! i already know what to keep by heart. i've been collecting since 2003. :)

I'm actually already hooked lol, I look at all of my change as soon as I get some. I've been collecting some coins for a while, some that I have found metal detecting others I have got at a flea market. The only problem is I don't know what to keep all the time because I'm fairly new at collecting. I just got the 2007 Red Book, so I'm sure that will come in handy. Anyways my metal detector is pretty horrible, was only like $99 at walmart lol and it's starting to break so I decided to give coin roll hunting a chance in-till I can get a much better metal detector.(Probably will still be coin roll hunting when i get that though)
