Question on DEUS

this is why i keep my iron audio on when searching for home sites. there are times when you are able to see elements of leftover material culture like a wall, fireplace, foundation, etc, and there are others where you simply hear it via the iron level beneath your feet. in our hobby, eyes AND ears are important. a little luck once in awhile dont hurt either! :icon_scratch:

yes, forgot to discuss that aspect of you post. they are hard to find. no doubt. that is probably why i do that type of hunting. if i wanted easy, i'd be a sand digger or coin shooter. :laughing7: i do my research and A LOT of walking through the woods, sometimes without a detector.

one of the best sites I know about was found without visual items to give you a clue `14 colonial coins came from there including 3 cobs. I find that alot of sites dont have much visual evidence then others are loaded the moral of that story is a detector with no discrim in hand at all times would be a great idea.

...and a lot of walking through the woods. sometimes i find places before work and dont have a detector with me, so i just walk with notta. it's nice to put all the fancy equipment away and use your eyes and other senses. you get a feel for a place that way. sometimes you can feel where something may have been and later come back with a detector to check it out. we have woods here that just go forever. i always wonder what is a little further in... agreed though, detector is the best way, NO discrimination. hear it ALL.

Working the "Mason Jar Lid" farm in southern VA - nothing so far in the residence yards (but the lids) but lots of dilapidated out buildings to explore including some living quarters. They are really overgrown tho - hard to swing a detector in or around them and looking a little dangerous to go in some of them. I will keep hitting them because I think they have secrets to reveal.

where are you in southern VA vferrari? I am in Hampton. be cool if we could relic hunt somewhere, someday.

Scott - sent you a PM.

If you are going to a national park I have a warning, do not try to search a Griz for relics using a pinpointer. He might get the wrong idea...
Might find some very nice bear bells and pepper spray cans.

you usually find the bells in the grizz scat. the bells fail to digest after they eat the hiker who uses them to warn the bear they are approaching. that is the running joke about people and those bear bells when you are in and around yellowstone. :laughing9:

And griz scat comes from a griz, right? So "do not try to search a Griz for relics using a pinpointer".

if you think about it, looking in their scat may not be a bad idea, using a pinpointer. there you may find bells, gold teeth, jewelry, etc. those things they could not digest after eating the human who "warned" them using the bear bells. :dontknow:

Some of my best finds were under different types of excrement. Cow, Dog and some undefinable....

Who knows... you might even find a pinpointer or two in there.

I've scanned dog poop a few times, all the while praying to myself "Please don't beep! PLEASE don't!"

for some reason, every time i find a metal detector in grizz scat, it's a white's! :laughing7:

Didint want to make a new thread so decided to ask my newbie questions in this one. I finally got my first metal detector(Deus) and I knew that it would be quite alot to learn. I'm wondering about some basic maintenance issues and, basic info how use the device properly.

1.The coil is waterproof, but how about the head unit itself. Can the head unit be used in light rain, or moisture like in the pocket ?
2.Should deus be ground balanced manually/pumping, or is the tracking enough(only using presets to start)
3.How much noise should the deus make when searching or the machine resting on the ground. My device is very silent compared to alot of videos where it talks all the time. Is it because of the tracking ground balance that it only talks when lifted up.
4.Can you lift the device off the ground and walk like 5 min and then just start searching again or do you have to ground balance it again, or restart ?
5.Should I take the coil cover off after searching and clean the coil every time ?
6.Can large metal objects like shovel and continuously lifting deus up cause issues with the device/harm it, or mess up with the functionality ?
7.Do you use shoes with small metal on them, noticed that the 11'' coil picks them up.
8.How much pumping on the rocks/ground can the coil take, seems quite normal to hit on stuff in forest.

Very newbie questions, I ordered the deus handbook and plan to just use the presets until I understand how to change settings properly, so my questions are more about the basic use that I couldn't find info.

1.The coil is waterproof, but how about the head unit itself. Can the head unit be used in light rain, or moisture like in the pocket ?Keep the controller and headphones dry.Water is not your friend with these
2.Should deus be ground balanced manually/pumping, or is the tracking enough(only using presets to start)I run manual ussually a couple points below what the controller shows the ground reading.
3.How much noise should the deus make when searching or the machine resting on the ground. My device is very silent compared to alot of videos where it talks all the time. Is it because of the tracking ground balance that it only talks when lifted up.Lower ground balance and increased sensitivity will make the machine more chatty.
4.Can you lift the device off the ground and walk like 5 min and then just start searching again or do you have to ground balance it again, or restart ?Depends on your soil. Always keep an eye on your ground balance
5.Should I take the coil cover off after searching and clean the coil every time ?Not every time. It will depend on how dirty you get it.
6.Can large metal objects like shovel and continuously lifting deus up cause issues with the device/harm it, or mess up with the functionality ?Not that I have ever seen
7.Do you use shoes with small metal on them, noticed that the 11'' coil picks them up.It can pickup shoes. NO STEEL TOES. other than that you will be ok
8.How much pumping on the rocks/ground can the coil take, seems quite normal to hit on stuff in forest.I have never damaged a coil but I take care of it. bumping brush and tress etc wont hurt it.
