Has anyone ever dug a counterfeit American coin ? like a quarter or half or something that had the appearance of being real, but clearly is not ? But it was from the time period of the design of the coin?
30 years ago I dug a Standing Liberty Quarter, or what I thought was one, only it wasn't in very good shape and was clearly made out of lead. But you can see the spread eagle on one side and the standing liberty on the other, and correct size of a quarter.
Found in downtown Charleston SC I believe at an old church yard.

I sand casted a nickel out of aluminum in high school shop class and was showing to all the other classmates. They were all blown away at how real it looked. The shop teacher wondered what they were all looking at and came over and the kid who had said look at this. He took it and said we're not going to be making any counterfeit coins here and he tossed it back into the furnace of molten aluminum. To me it sounds like you found a quarter someone either made for fun or was maybe hoping to fool someone with it.

I have dug a seated liberty dime that was made of copper and silverplated, the silver was actually flaking off.
Also probably not a countertfeit, but a game token/poker chip, I have a big penny made of pewter or lead cast between two other big pennies (so everything is reversed).

Yes I have dug a counterfeit Two Cent piece it has holes drilled in it I post a picture when I can Ohyea and the early King George copper are from a mint but Machine Mills early colonial copper coins.

I have dug a few coins in my 56 years of detecting. I never realized they counterfeited coins till a few years back

There has and always will be countifiters I'm thinking. No matter consequences or warnings against it, someone will always give it their best attempts.

GREAT point Tamerock. I just never thought of it before

I dug a counterfeit V-nickel from an early 1900’s ball field. A nickel had been used to punch into a lead slug so the ‘coin’ shows a reversed image.
