i have been using the 250 for about a month now and have found a whole lot of coins and artifacts but very little jewelry. i have narrowed it down to two things........either the jewelry is not there which is unlikely since i search mostly parks, ballparks, and churches..........or.....i am passing the jewelry over thinking that it is trash.when you search in jewelry mode,do you dig targets that show as pulltabs and foil on your target id display? how about if the target id is bouncing around and you cant get a solid reading?so far i have been passing by these targets because i learned from experiance that its almost always trash when my ace 250 behaves this way. still.............i have no rings to speak of....what do you think?

I too have no rings as of yet. I use my ACE250 primarily in coin or jewelry mode, and skip anything down in the pulltab range if its not a solid, repeatable target. I will dig anything that says it's a coin - penny dime, quarter, half or dollar, and solid, repeatable nickels targets (which are almost always nickels!) When it comes to the iron or the ring/pulltab icons, I will only dig if the signals is a good, solid signal. Any signal that is scattered or inconsistant, I don't dig. These solid signals have so far been pretty much pulltabs, or nails and bottlecaps under "iron". If you are hunting primarily for jewelry, I would consider digging all signals that aren't iron, as you will dramatically increase your chances at a gold ring or earring, but you will also dramatically increase the size of your pulltab collection as well. If you want gold, you gotta dig those pulltabs! Hope that helps some! Good luck, and HH!

thanks john! it seems like i am using the 250 the same way that you are.maybe all it is is that i havent stumbled across those rings yet.i always have this nagging doubt in my mind that that pulltab signal i just ignored could be a ring or something.......but if you dig all the pulltab signals thats just about ALL i would be digging all day!!thanks for your insight! :)

I was thinking the same thing today. ?The only jewelry I have find thus far has been the crucifix off of an inexpensive rosary; this was on edge at about 2" in damp beach sand. I tend to dig most things even in the pulltab range, at least for the first 1/2 hour or so until I have a pouch full of tabs. ?So far if it says it's a pulltab it's been a pulltab; though I do notice even though it's usually pretty solid, it does not give the same d-ding that a coin will. ?I've also noticed bottlecaps come in as Q's and cans come in as D's, again both without the d-ding. ?I was getting sick of digging those little pull off tops from the inside of gatorade and those little plastic juice jugs, so I notched out the two far left bars, up to but not including the pulltab. ?Given the display I should still be able to hit gold and definately silver, as well as nickels which I have found several of. ?I have airtested on gold, silver and costume rings, neckchains and earrings all which have been solid within expected range hits so I have faith that it will find them...just gotta find out where to find 'em! ?In all of this I have come to one conclusion: the man who invented batteries also must have invented and engineered pulltabs to read as gold.... given this nearly undesputable fact, he will always have plenty of income from us having to replace batteries eaten up by pulltabs! ?:D

lol!! its a conspiricy!!! ;D ;D

Stay in jewelry mode for as long as you can stand it and then some :)

I was working a school playground a couple nights ago and for 2 hours i ran in jewelry mode. I had about a half hour left before dark set in and all i had to show was 2 crusty zink pennys and a load of crap, pencil heads, bottle caps, pull tabs, canslaw, the works. Just as i was about to switch over to coin mode to save my up and down time i get a hit that skates across the id screen. It wouldnt lock onto an id, it would just bounce back and forth like mad. Im glad i dug (normaly i wouldnt have) because Daddy brought home BLING BLING, my first SS bracelett.

I air tested the bracelett and it reads as a pulltab. But in the ground she was goin crazy. So ive learned it pays to dig them jumpy signals and or pulltabs for as long as you can. :)

Ive also noticed that old wheaties and indian head pennys will also jump on the id screen. Not as severe as the bracelet did but still jumpy. Could have been the soil giving me a fit though, Virginia red mud :)

Jewelry isn't lost in masses like coins are (therefore) you're not going to find it on a regular basis like you do coins. Also, to increase your chances of finding jewelry, you have to put yourself in places where you have the best chance at finding it.

It sounds like you guys are doing fairly good with your machines, and know the 250 pretty well from all that you're stating here, so, I believe that if you'd have passed over any kind of "silver jewelry" to date - you would have found it because it reads (for the most part) like coins do, and being a Garrett machine, the Bell Tone would have went nuts (especially on rings) because they read/sound the same as quarters & 1/2 dollars.

As for gold items,

these are a different animal altogether, total different sound,

if I were you guys, I'd run the 250 in "Relic Mode" and notch out the 1st 2 iron icons to the far left if they're not already notched out, and I would dig any and all targets from 1 notch left of the nickel icon on up to $1 (and especially more so) any signal that is strong, repeatable and that dings in both sweep directions.

This will increase your chances of finding gold (as long as you're in a place that it is likely to be found).

Hope this helps,

HH

thanks for the advice everyone. i am going to try lonewolfs idea of running in relics mode with the last two iron notches discriminated out and see how that goes.this site rules! thanks again.............keith

Lonewolf, I'll give it a shot! I'm gonna set up the "custom" mode the way you suggest, and dig all solid repeatable targets and see how we do! Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated!
