Detector(s) used
Bounty Hunter,Prizim II
I have just re-entered this hobby after about 10 yrs. My son bought me a Bounty Hunter VLF detector in june,to get me back into it and I had a wonderful time. So I decided to upgrade, considered the Ace 250 & Prizm II,a local dealer talked me into the prizim. I cant seem to get the hang of this detector,I've read the instructions, tips and watched the dvd, tested on targets, etc. Pin pointing is new to me,never had this feature in the past, locate target, dig, too many times nothing in hole. Any tips would help, please. Maybe you cant teach an old dog new tricks :(

I have a Prizm 11 and love it.

I dont know if you are discriminating out anything, but once you turn on pinpoint its taking you to the all metal mode and by your screen it should tell you approximately what you have.

So if you have it discriminating out iron.....and then you make a hit....turn off discriminator ...and see if you get the hit again,.....go slow....if its still showing up as silver .....make an initial plug and then turn on pinpoint....wave slowly over your hole and then the plug you removed....it will beep very loud once its dead center.....I like to make a cross over the hit to make sure I hit dead center.....remove the dirt and then make sure you check each clump.....pinpointer will beep directly in the center of your coil when it hits.

I hunted with a guy last night who kept telling me how good his machine was .....after he searched an area I walked directly behind him and dug a 1943 silver dime....he said his was saying trash over the area....part of the problem was ,he was swinging way to fast.....within two feet of the dime was another hard hit....dug up two pull tabs and then underneath was a silver horseshoe ring....He missed both these targets.
Ahhhh well live and learn.

Thank You for your reply,I dont think its the detector,I think I just need more practice with it and cooler weather.

No matter how much you read or how many DvD's you watch , its time
spent with your machine that will do you the most good. The experts
are very helpful but ya can't beat experience. I had to learn to turn down the sensitivity on my machine and slow down till I got to know it. It used to drive me nuts to see others rolling along digging up great stuff and me standing there with a hole as big as a grave and
nothing to show for it :P , but I kept at it and kept reading and IGNORED the folks who say " if you woulda bought a ( fill in the brand ) metal detector you wouldn't have any trouble...........and
after a lot of hours in the yard I'm much more confident and finding
LOTs more good targets.
Stick with it , trust your machine. and practice ;)

HH , keep on swingin

Thanks so much everyone, you all are the best. I have always enjoyed this hobby and plan to continue. I guess having found many great finds in the past I expected to jump right back in.I never took into consideration I am in a new area, and hunting alone now for the first time too. Practice seems to be what I need. Thanks Guys.
