question about gold

I know this may not be the right spot for questions..... but it is the busiest , so I figured I would try here first.
If I have a bunch of scrap gold to sell to a refinery , whats the best way to figure out for myself a appox value ?

I shouldve added if you need the
money pretty quick take it to a
local jeweler or pawn shop.
I know you want get more from
those two places i mentioned,
but sometimes if you are in a bind
thats the way to go.

A better alternative is to find a metal testing lab and assaying services in your area. These are the labs that many of the metal buying services use to check the gold content. You are essentially bypassing the middle man. In this market they are often more than happy to deal with the public. Here are some that my company deals with:
