I hunted a new (for me) camp today and found quite a few bullets including several unusual mini balls that I don't recognize. They seem slightly longer and they have deep, thin walled cones in the base. I also found a sharps and a standard mini ball, you can see it in the bottom row in my hand, next to one of the longer ones. Any ideas what they are? Thanks for your help.

Sorry to have to say, the ones with "oversize" rings/grooves with a very short base-ring and a very deep thin-walled cavity are definitely modern-made "Lyman Mold" reproductions of civil war Minie-bullets, for use by Blackpowder Rifle target shooters and hunters. Go to the following webpage and scroll down to the end for bullet #575213. The others in your hand, having the typical (or "narrow" in comparison to the Lyman) rings/grooves with a tall base-ring are real civil war Minie-bullets.

Thank you for your response, a bit disappointing, but that's the way it goes. Can't figure out why so many of them were in the camp area.

I personally know that the correct ID for those Reproduction Minie-bullets is disappointing, especially when you dig them along with several real civil war bullets. It happened to me too, when I was digging behind the yankee trenches at the battle of Cold Harbor VA. Apparently somebody using a modern (or Repro) Blackpowder Rifle was doing some target practice, because I dug about a dozen of those same fired Lyman-Mold repro Minies in a small area on a forested hillside, along with several fired "long-distance overshot" real Confederate .577/58-caliber Gardner Minie-bullets.

"when I was digging behind the yankee trenches at the battle of Cold Harbor VA."

How many yankees did you gun down in that scrape, old timer?

Gunning 'em all down would take too much effort and time... simpler to just close the Red Sea over the invaders (in my dreams).
